Emily Blunt might be suiting up in some black spandex and red hair if a new rumor is to be believed. According to YouTuber Grace Randolph, Blunt is being courted by Marvel Studios to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an alternate universe version of Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow in the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

This would put Emily Blunt in the same rumor mill as husband John Krasinski, which sounds like a very cute meta cameo idea. Blunt was once up for the role of Black Widow years ago, so this would also act as another fun treat for fans who thought these roles could go to very different actors. The same approach is said to be happening with Tom Cruise as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. If this is the tactic that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige wants to take, it certainly sounds like an appealing one.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is promising a lot of wild ideas, and Emily Blunt showing up as Natasha Romanoff a.ka. Black Widow would not be out of the realm of possibility. Other rumors surrounding the Sam Raimi film include Tobey Maguire returning as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. That would certainly be a radical reveal. And since we know that Scarlet Witch will be showing up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is certain that the weirdness going in WandaVision will play into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s bigger plans for a multiverse of possible characters and alternate worlds.

However, this should be reinforced as a rumor and nothing official has been announced about Emily Blunt being cast as Black Widow. And to be doubly cautious, the source of this rumor has proven to be extremely unreliable in the past. Her reputation precedes her and it would not be surprising to find out this rumor holds no weight. In fact, it could possibly be Randolph just doing some guessing work. Making the connection between Blunt, Krasinski, and their past brushes with Marvel roles is a logical one. That does not mean that anything substantive is currently happening with such a possibility.

Then again, it could be 100% true and Marvel Studios is really doing anything it can to get Emily Blunt to appear as Black Widow. Could all these cameos also be acting as long-term deals for future films involving these high profile stars? Having them show up as cameos sounds very fun, but will Marvel Studios be gauging the best reactions to some of these alternate universe versions of their heroes and seeing if any of the actors they manage to nab want to return for future projects? It would be a smart and exciting way to approach “re-casting” iconic roles like Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see if Emily Blunt manages to pop up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It’s going to be fun looking back at all these rumors and seeing which ones (if any) ended up true in the final project.
