Rumor has it that Dwayne Johnson is being eyed to star in a Jack Frost remake. The original 1998 film, starring Michael Keaton, was both a critical and commercial failure upon its release but has since developed a strong cult following. Fans of the original aren’t too happy about the prospect of seeing yet another remake that could very well tarnish the film’s legacy.

Dwayne Johnson Sequels And Reboots

By now, Dwayne Johnson is well known for starring in an alarming amount of franchise sequels and remakes.

As of this writing, The Rock is expected to be cooking up at least 10 sequels or reboots, and that’s not even including the possible Jack Frost remake.

Upcoming Dwayne Johnson titles that have been green-lit include San Andreas 2, Fast & Furious 11, Jungle Cruise 2, Red Notice 2, Red Notice 3, and Moana, to name a few.

Michael Keaton Was Jack Frost

Though Dwayne Johnson has proven that he can move units, we can’t help but wonder if he’s the right guy to fill Michael Keaton’s shoes in a Jack Frost reboot.

He certainly knows how to have fun with comedic roles, but Keaton has a special kind of deadpan delivery that’s impossible to replicate. Though we may be getting ahead of ourselves here because there currently aren’t any writers or directors attached to the alleged project.

Right For Jack Frost?

It’s worth noting, however, that the entire premise about a harmonica-playing Jazz musician who gets reincarnated as a talking snowman so he can hang out with his son is an inherently wild concept in and of itself.

And it’s not like Dwayne Johnson is remaking the other Jack Frost movie, which drew inspiration from 1988’s Child’s Play.

Now that the cat’s (kind of) out of the bag, the internet is losing its mind over yet another Dwayne Johnson remake. Folks wish Johnson wasn’t using his muscle to act in more adult-oriented action movies but rather to be involved with more family-oriented movies like Jack Frost.

Jack Frost Was A Box Office Bomb

But when you consider how poorly the original Jack Frost performed, it’s not entirely ridiculous for a movie studio to see if they can make an updated version that features Dwayne Johnson as its titular character.

After all, Keaton’s version currently has a 19 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Commercially speaking, it did even worse, earning only $34 million against its reported budget of $85 million.

A New Spin On The Story

By the same token, fans of the original Jack Frost are well aware of its flaws but attribute its staying power to Michael Keaton‘s performance.

In other words, they know it’s bad, but nostalgia has a powerful way of encouraging people to look at the past through rose-colored glasses. For all we know, Dwayne Johnson can lean into what worked in the original film while putting his spin on it that will pay proper homage to the original.

Dwayne Johnson Wait And See

Without knowing any further details about the Jack Frost remake, we’re just going to have to wait and see if Dwayne Johnson can deliver the goods. If the rumors are true, he better start taking some harmonica lessons.
