Time travel movies often suffer from their inability to be timeless, but Donnie Darko isn’t one of those movies. And now you have the chance to stream this sci-fi classic.

Jake Gyllenhaal And Others In Donnie Darko

Jake Gyllenhaal

While this unexpected hit marks Jake Gyllenhaal’s career breakthrough, his performance is bolstered by supporting actors like Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore, Beth Grant, Holmes Osborne, Mary McDonnell, and his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Centering on the cerebral, Donnie Darko treads the line between the mind-bending manipulation of wormholes transporting you to a tangent universe and the inner-psyche of its troubled titular protagonist.

Donnie’s Strange Encounters

At its outset, Donnie Darko brings us to a seemingly perfect suburb in Middlesex, Virginia, where Donnie inexplicably wakes up on a golf course.

When he arrives home, he finds out that a jet engine of unknown origin crashed into his bedroom, which would have most certainly killed him if he slept through the night instead of sleepwalking.

Donnie has an encounter with a man in a rabbit costume who tells him that the world will end in “28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds,” which sets the rest of the film’s narrative in motion.

Though Donnie Darko initially comes off as a normal suburban teen, we quickly learn that his mental state is questionable.

He frequently visits a psychotherapist named Dr. Thurman, who he talks to about his visions of the man in the rabbit costume, Frank. Though Donnie exhibits symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, the town of Middlesex is clearly not the same town he lived in before the jet engine crashed into his house.

Sleeping Versus Waking Life

Not fully able to tell the difference between what’s really happening in his waking life and what he’s hallucinating, Donnie becomes fascinated with time travel under Frank’s guidance. His curiosity points him in the direction of a woman named Roberta Sparrow (known by the town’s teenagers as Grandma Death), and the book she wrote, The Philosophy of Time Travel.

As Donnie learns more about the strange reality he’s living in, he commits a number of crimes ranging from flooding his school to committing arson while trying to make sense of the messages he’s receiving from Frank, Roberta Sparrow’s book, and members of his community who all seem to be knowingly nudging him to act in certain questionable ways.

Donnie Darko Shrouded In Mystery

Donnie Darko shrouds itself in ambiguity with its theatrical cut, leaving its premise and conclusion open-ended. The director’s cut, which has an additional 20 minutes of footage, tackles the more granular details of time travel and tangent universes in a way that narrows its scope of interpretation.

It’s recommended that you watch both versions of the film to arrive at your own conclusion, but both iterations will equally alter your sense of perception versus reality.

Despite its modest budget ($4.5 million) and limited theatrical run, Donnie Darko was a critical hit upon its release in 2001, garnering a critical score of 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics unanimously praise the film’s inherent weirdness, as well as its ability to blend satire and earnestness within such an odd narrative framework.

Though its premise is completely off-the-wall, Donnie Darko’s storytelling is carried by its all-star cast because their on-screen chemistry is so convincing.

Most notably, Maggie Gyllenhaal was cast as Donnie’s sister, which adds a level of realism to such a fantastical film that only a real brother and sister could accurately portray.

If you didn’t know they were related in real life, you’d be wholly convinced of some sort of off-screen familial bond while watching them deliver jabs to each other from across the dinner table in a way that only real siblings could.

The theatrical cut of Donnie Darko can currently be streamed on Tubi. If you’re left with more questions than answers after watching the theatrical cut, it comes with strong recommendations that you check out the director’s cut.
