You may not know this, but the ultimate form of wish fulfillment comes from having appendages that turn into chainsaws with the pull of a string. Chainsaw Man is more than willing to explore this concept in the most brutal way imaginable, and it’s just the kind of violent anime series you don’t know you’re missing out on. While there’s only one 12-episode season available for streaming on the Hulu section of Disney+, it was announced this past December that the series will continue with a feature-length film that’s currently in active development.

The Chainsaw Man anime is based on the equally violent Tatsuki Fujimoto-written manga of the same name. The series is an adaptation of the first 38 chapters of the manga and centers on 16-year-old Denji, a young man working for the yakuza as a Devil Hunter in his efforts to repay the substantial debt his deceased father left behind. Working alongside his trusty companion, Pochita, a Chainsaw Devil who resembles a dog, Denji learns that his boss’s group has formed an alliance with the Zombie Devil, who dismembers Denji.

Denji Becomes The Chainsaw Man

Pochita absorbs Denji’s blood, causing the two of them to merge into one being, giving Denji the ability to transform into Chainsaw Man, a human-devil hybrid who has the ability to grow chainsaws out of his arms and head. Denji’s violent run-in with the Zombie Devil and yakuza catches the attention of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government-sanctioned group led by Makima. Denji agrees to work for Makima with the hope that he can settle his father’s debts and live out the rest of his life in peace.

Devil Hunting

Throughout Chainsaw Man’s run, Denji works with Aki Hayakawa, an experienced Devil Hunter, and Power, a fiend who has her own questionable motives. Though their personalities clash, they all share the common goal of destroying the Gun Devil, a powerful monster responsible for taking the lives of over a million people, including Aki’s family. Throughout his journey, Denji learns to overcome his many obstacles while learning about desire, betrayal, and identity in the context of the violent path he has chosen to take.

Chainsaw Man Is An Instant Hit

Premiering state-side with English dubbed audio in October 2022, Chainsaw Man was an immediate hit upon its release. Receiving near-universal acclaim, the series garnered a 97 percent critical score against a 90 percent audience score across over 250 ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Praised for its imagination, action sequences, and dark sense of humor, Chainsaw Man fully embraces the exploration of humanity’s collective fears manifesting in the physical world as demons and monsters that will most certainly elevate your heart rate upon watching.

No More Episodes, But A Movie Is On The Way

While fans of Chainsaw Man were disappointed to learn that the series will not be renewed for a second season, it was announced that the series will continue in the form of a theatrical movie instead, entitled Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. While we have to wait for further developments regarding the upcoming movie’s production schedule and release date, the anime series is currently available to stream through the Hulu Section of Disney+. You will need to have active subscriptions to both services to view the title, as this feature is still in beta.
