A beautifully executed piece of fan art has the Internet envisioning what actress Chloe Grace Moretz would look like playing Supergirl in DC’s Cinematic Universe. A post to the horrific.heroics Instagram account five days ago has the internet abuzz with speculation.

The thought may have already crossed the actress’s mind. According to a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the actress said, “Yeah, we’ve talked a little bit about it. I mean, I think for me, I would be really interested in playing a villain in Marvel or DC.”

The vagueness of the quote leads us to speculate that Chloe Grace Moretz may have yet to meet with a studio about a specific project. However, she goes on to say, “I love a superhero. I think that’d be really fun, too, but I think it’s just all about finding the one that really matches what you’re wanting to get across and the scope of the character. I think it’d be really fun if it was the right role and the right project.” So, we may not see her in a Supergirl role but more of a villain type.

These days, much is in flux over at DC Studios, where James Gunn has recently been crowned co-CEO along with longtime producing partner Peter Safran. The studio is cutting long-time actors such as Henry Cavill, who has played the iconic role of Superman since 2013 and had recently appeared in a cameo end-credit scene in Black Adam. Despite Cavill announcing he would be returning to play Superman again last October, he had the rug pulled out from him by the studio.

These changes come as DC Studio’s parent company Warner Bros. has been making slashes across the board to rein in costs after merging with Discovery, Inc. The much-anticipated Batgirl movie (which would have featured Brendan Fraser and Michael Keaton’s return as Batman) was shelved, despite being essentially finished, and many streaming programs have abruptly disappeared from HBO Max.

But whenever there is a great change, there is a great opportunity. And if the internet would like to see Chloe Grace Moretz in a Supergirl role, they may get their chance. Chloe Grace Moretz had her break-out role staring as the superhero Hit-Girl opposite Nicolas Cage in 2010’s Kick-Ass, so playing a heroine is undoubtedly in her wheelhouse.

Moretz’s most recent project was the lead role in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of legendary cyberpunk author William Gibson’s 2014 science fiction novel, The Peripheral. The show is a dystopian tale that jumps timelines between a small Appalachian town in the near future, where Chloe Grace Moretz’s character makes money on the side playing advanced video game systems, and a further down-the-line London.

The future of DC’s Supergirl franchise is also in flux. But we know that Sasha Calle had been cast as Supergirl before everything hit the fan, but it may be that Calle’s Supergirl will not return after 2023. At the same time, it is only Henry Cavill’s Superman that has been confirmed to be cut.

While we wait and see what Gunn decides is the future of DC Universe, pressure from fans may impact the decision-making. Indeed, the piece of fan art posted to Instagram by horrific.heroics may help to shift the balance to fan favorites.
