Avatar 2 Breaks Disney+ Record That Seemed Impossible

Avatar: The Way of Water

Premiering in December of 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water quickly went above and beyond expectations, nabbing itself bragging rights of being the third-highest-grossing movie in cinematic history, taking a place just behind the original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. But, on Disney+ and Max, Avatar 2 is holding its own as the number one streamed movie. Sinking the competition across all other platforms, Disney announced during its Q3 earnings call that the James Cameron-helmed feature was the studio’s most viewed electronic home video release domestically.

Now that Avatar 2 is on streaming, it has broken Disney’s all-time streaming viewership record.

Diving onto both Max and Disney+ on June 7, audiences can’t seem to get enough of the sequel with folks tuning in left and right to bring Avatar 2 into their homes. Prior to that, the film was released digitally on March 28, quickly gobbling up sales before being knocked to second place following the April 22 release of Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Qasp: Quantumania.

As far as what can be expected to come from the Titanic helmer’s CGI-heavy franchise, Avatar 2 is just the beginning. Three more installments have already received the green light, meaning that audiences will have more stories from Pandora arriving over the next almost decade with the fifth slated to arrive in theaters in 2031.

Initially, Avatar 3 was expected to land in cinemas in December 2024, but Disney pushed the title back an entire year, forcing fans to wait until December 2025 to turn the page on the next chapter in the series.

Like Avatar 2, the follow-up films are already expected to make waves with audiences and critics as the franchise continues to gain traction with every new release. Similar to the other big box office earner of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water proved that even if years have passed between a first and second film, as long as it’s done properly, fans will keep coming back for more.

Avatar 3

While little is known surrounding the plot of Avatar 3, it’s expected to expand on the universe of Pandora even more than was done in Avatar 2 and pick up with characters from the first two features as well as introduce new ones to the fold.

So far, we know that a long list of stars will be back to reprise their roles with names including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Edie Falco, Jack Champion, Jemaine Clement, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, and more already signed on. Newcomers include Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin, and David Thewlis.

Avatar 2 saw the return of Jake Sully (Worthington) as he and his family faced new challenges brought on by humans. Stopping at nothing to protect those who he loves, Jake joined forces with the Metkayina clan of Pandora to ensure safety for not only his family but also all those inhabiting the moon.

With groundbreaking effects that will only get better as the years go on, there’s no doubt that James Cameron has more tricks up his sleeves for what the future of the Avatar franchise holds. For those who need to catch up on the critically celebrated Avatar 2, the title is currently streaming on both Disney+ and Max.
