The detection features in Tesla vehicles allow them to detect pedestrians and avoid hitting them and other objects. But can they detect ghosts, too? If the TikTok posted by user offical__robbypurpora is any indication, the answer is yes.

A Tesla’s pedestrain detection screen appears to show ghosts while driving in a cemetary.

The video shows the dashboard screen of a Tesla as the driver is driving through a cemetery. On the pedestrian detection screen, human figures randomly pop up and disappear, even though there isn’t anyone around. The pedestrians, or seemingly ghosts, start popping up more rapidly at the end of the video, making things even creepier.

While this video is definitely spooky, it seems more likely that there is a logical explanation. As plenty of comments pointed out, it’s possible that Tesla’s pedestrian detection system is simply picking up large objects like floral arrangements or tombstones rather than ghosts. Since the pedestrian detection system doesn’t have visual representations of these objects, they just show up as pedestrians instead.

The video is definitely good marketing for Tesla, and the intrigue factor is ratcheted up by the fact the driver is driving by the house from The Conjuring.

Famously, Tesla also likes to build so-called Easter Eggs into its cars, such as the “rainbow road” mode, which changes the infotainment screen’s digital path into an homage to the popular Mario Kart track. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the car company made it so that anytime you passed a graveyard, the pedestrian indicator made it seem like ghosts were appearing and disappearing. This seems like a less likely explanation, but it’s still semi-plausible.

The video is definitely good marketing for Tesla, and the intrigue factor is ratcheted up by the fact the driver is driving by the house from The Conjuring. Horror fans and fans of paranormal investigations will be familiar with the Rhode Island farmhouse that was investigated by famous paranormal investigators and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. The home was inhabited by the Perron family, who reported hauntings by evil ghosts and spirits.

…Tesla’s pedestrian detection system is simply picking up large objects like floral arrangements or tombstones rather than ghosts.

The Perron Family Haunting inspired the 2013 film The Conjuring, which became massively popular and has since spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs. Of course, the house itself has become a macabre tourist attraction, which people can take tours of if they dare. Typically, these tours are during the day, so this particular tourist went rogue when they went in their Tesla to investigate ghosts at night.

As with any video on social media, you have to take everything with a hefty grain of salt. Out of all the places where a Tesla might detect ghosts, the house that The Conjuring is based on certainly seems like the type of spot where you might come across some spirits. It would be interesting to see if Tesla decides to weigh in on the whole thing, but then again, the company is likely happy to ride the marketing wave.

Maybe if you have a Tesla, it would be worth checking your pedestrian detector if you happen to be taking a tour of The Conjuring house. Maybe you’ll find some ghosts of your own. Or maybe your detector will detect some flowers and make them look like ghosts.
