Star Trek fans were shocked at a certain new character on a popular show and are asking: did Timothee Chalamet sneak onto the Enterprise?
Like the classic episodes of its predecessors, the third installment of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sees the crew of the Enterprise taking on a mysterious alien virus. Titled “Ghosts of Illyria,” the episode also explores Number One’s back story and sees Captain Pike and Spock fighting to survive an ion storm while visiting a strange planet. While the horror-themed plot is definitely intriguing, it was the very Timothee Chalamet-looking crewman, who brought the illness on board the ship that got people talking.
As one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young talents, a minor role in a Star Trek series would be a strange choice for Timothee Chalamet. The 26-year-old began his career on stage and a small role in the 2012 drama series Homeland. He made his feature film debut in Men, Women & Children and also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s science-fiction movie Interstellar. But it was his lead role as a lovestruck teenager in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name that really brought him to the fore. His portrayal even earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
More high-profile roles followed in movies like Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy, The King, and Little Women. He later snagged his biggest blockbuster so far with the role of Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. Timothee Chalamet is set to reprise the role for Dune 2 opposite Zendaya as Chani. With several other major movie titles on the way, including the iconic role of Willy Wonka in Wonka, Chalamet’s career is skyrocketing. So unless he is s serious Trekkie who always dreamed of appearing on a starship, he wouldn’t have the time for such a minor part.
Unfortunately, he isn’t a Trekkie (as far as we know) and that was not Timothee Chalamet shoving his head through a computer panel to get his photon fix on the USS Enterprise. Instead, it was an actor named Daniel Gravelle, who bears a striking resemblance to the Dune star. There isn’t much information available about him, his acting credits include Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Fahrenheit 451, and now, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And if he shares more than looks with his doppelganger, we will probably see more of him in the future.
While Timothee Chalamet is hard at work creating new movies, Star Trek fans can tune in to more episodes of Strange New Worlds on Paramount+. Created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet, it is the eleventh series in the popular space franchise and forms part of Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe. It serves as a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off and follows the story of Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy.
The series premiered on May 5th, with the first 10-episode season scheduled to run through July 7th. So far, it’s been met with positive reviews from critics who gushed over the storytelling and cast. A second season is currently in production and will premiere in 2023. Meanwhile, Timothee Chalamet’s Dune sequel is set to be released on October 20, 2023.
