See Elliot Page announce his new transgender superhero for this upcoming season of The Umbrella Academy premiering on Netflix
Elliot Page made a major announcement on Tuesday (via Deadline) for the new season of his hit Netflix show The Umbrella Academy. There is a new character coming to town with the actor letting on that his previous character of Vanya Hargreeves will now be Viktor Hargreeves, coming out as transgender in this story. It is a major move for the series which will shift some of its story in this direction while keeping the original cast intact. And it’s an exciting pivot for the show.
In the Twitter post by Elliot Page, we can see the character of Viktor Hargreeves sitting at a diner counter. Presumably, this is a scene from the upcoming Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy. Netflix followed up Page’s tweet with another one supporting the move by the show, something that was expected after Page’s initial announcement a couple of years ago. Elliot Page came out publicly as transgender back in December 2020 and announced his preferred pronouns would be “he” and “they”. He quickly became an advocate for transgender rights and even appeared on the cover of Time magazine as the first openly transgender person to do so. And in the subsequent timeline since that announcement, Elliot Page had previously posted some photos on Instagram, one of them being a shirtless pic displaying a decidedly new physical look.
The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series of the same name and is through the first two seasons on Netflix. It’s been almost two years since we’ve caught up with this story with the second season releasing in the summer of 2020. The series follows the story of the Hargreeves children, adopted by the billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves after they were all birthed mysteriously. Each has a unique superpower. With this announcement by Elliot Page, it’s still assumed that Viktor will retain similar powers from previous seasons and he will be able to use sound waves as a means of force. It’s an extremely powerful skill set that wasn’t revealed until later in the show.
In addition to Elliot Page, the other Hargreeves children included Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castaneda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klause, and Aidan Gallagher as Five. Each has an alias and a power including super strength, telekinesis, mind control, raising of the dead, and quantum looping.
Elliot Page and company will premier Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix beginning on June 22nd. The first two seasons of the series have been critical hits, earning 76% and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively and Elliot Page has won numerous awards for his performance in the show. And from a viewership perspective, it’s been one of the best performers on the streamer, consistently ranking in their tops for the year through the first two seasons. There’s an expectation this next season follows right in line and it will be great to have Viktor Hargreeves in the mix.
