While the anxiously anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 remains the subject of the collective fandoms’ wildest dreams, Rockstar Games has just announced a new major content release for its non-stop profit-generating title — Grand Theft Online. The latest update will bring a series of new missions, called The Contract, featuring one of GTA V’s protagonists and rapper Dr.Dre. Besides Dr. Dre’s music, the developer and publisher Rockstar Games also announced minor updates for GTA online, like new activities, weapons, and vehicles.

As reported by Kotaku, this announcement was hinted at in late October, when rapper Snoop Dogg leaked news of a possible collaboration between Dr. Dre and the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Apparently, many GTA Online players have been very vocal about the game’s stale content, requesting new story additions, especially more single-player-oriented missions. Given that very little content was ever released since the game’s launch, The Contract is a pretty significant thing for the fans of GTA Online. Besides new content, the game will also bring Dr. Dre’s first public music release since Compton, his 2015 album, meaning Rockstar Games managed to appease two starved fandoms.

The new storyline will center around Franklin, one of GTA V’s protagonists, founding a new “celebrity solutions agency” in Los Santos, whose services cater to the rich and powerful. With the help of American record producer DJ Pooh, Franklin and Lamar Davis get together with Dr. Dre on a wild and hilarious ride through Los Santos. One of the new missions in GTA Online will be to recover Dre’s lost smartphone, containing new tracks — the very same that are being added to the game. If anyone’s wondering how Dr. Dre managed to lose his smartphone in Los Santos, he made a surprise cameo in GTA Online’s Cayo Perico heist last year.

The new mission pack will take gamers through Franklin’s old neighborhood, to some of the hottest parties in the city in excessive mansions, to FBI offices, and everywhere in between, as gamers accompany Franklin and the crew on a mission to retrieve Dre’s tracks. The content is expected to drop on December 15, bringing the new mission pack along with an eclectic new radio station featuring very special guest hosts. In fact, all in-game radio stations are being updated, bringing a ton of new and previously unheard exclusive tracks from Dre and other artists.

On the less good side, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers are slowly saying their goodbyes with the 8-year-old gaming title since Rockstar decided to pull the plug on the seventh-generation console’s GTA Online servers. The fans of Grand Theft Auto V’s online component are disappointed because their character data and game progression won’t be transferrable to the PlayStation 4 version of the game. To make things worse, wealth acquisition achieved through microtransactions is also not transferable or even refundable.

GTA Online is currently available as an online component of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. However, it will launch as a stand-alone product once GTA V comes to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022.
