Watch New Star Trek Webseries’ First Episode: Secret Voyage

While biding their time waiting for J.J. Abrams’ latest expansion of the Star Trek franchise, Trekkies have something new to watch. The first episode of a new fan-produced webseries, Star Trek: Secret Voyage, has hit the net for all to see.

Secret Voyage, from producer Craig Sheeler, takes place between the time when Captain James T. Kirk and company return from their five year mission and the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Check out the first episode right here and let us know what you think.

Secret Voyage follows “a new crew assembled by Starfleet for a covert mission.” Led by Captain Calvin Mercer (Tyrone Loukas), the team takes the Enterprise to the end of charted space, where a new potential fuel source may revolutionize space travel. Of course nothing is ever that straightforward or simple, and things take a turn for the sinister.

Despite a strong concept, and one hell of a lot of ambition, Star Trek: Secret Voyage has some definite problems. The acting leaves much to be desired, some of the special effects are clunky, there are technical problems with some of the sound and visuals, and more. There are narrative problems, too, like obvious dialogue, huge dumps of information, and overlong scenes.

Overall the show feels like people without a background in either filmmaking or storytelling made it. And that’s exactly the case. Secret Voyage is nerdy, adorable, and epic in scope, but there are bound to be issues as the producers get their bearings, technically speaking.

Even with all of the flaws,Star Trek: Secret Voyage has the potential to develop into something that is a lot of fun.

What did you think? Is this something you’d watch more of?

I have had an idea for a new series going on 7 years or so, but have no idea who to contact regarding it. The concept would have infinite possibilities, and low budget on the acting side, leaving room for a larger audio and visual budget. Any ideas as to how I could go about this vision would be appreciated. I believe it goes along with the vision Roddenberry held, as well as appealing to the majority of viewers no matter if they are in it for intellect, alien encounters, or conflicts. Looking for actual ways of conveying my ideas to the right people who can get them on the drawing board.

I’ll try to be brief. The storyline is a good idea but the pacing is terrible. Many scenes could have been a lot shorter and more effective. Often the dialogue seems phony, unnatural. That’s partially due to the level of acting ( not to say all the acting is terrible it is about what you would expect from a low-budget web series). What is missing here is brevity. The CGI interiors are cartoonish and need work. The X terrier shots of the enterprise were pretty good.

A lot of effort and time obviously went into this and it’s not by any means all bad. In fact what I think may be original scoring was quite good. I look forward to the next installment.

It definitely has potential. But it’s held back by a lot of things. The music is actually not bad, and I enjoyed the mysterious take on the classic theme during the main title sequence.

I hope they are able to improve the quality of everything else. I think they have something there, but it’s buried under a lot of rough work.

If the film makers read this I’d like them to take this as constructive criticism. What made “Star Trek” work was big ideas but also a camaraderie between the actors. Don’t overshoot, do what you can well. If CGI effects look terrible use cheap practical effects and real sets like they did in the old days, even if it’s all painted plywood. The worst part for me was the dialogue–high school plays have been better. Rehearse, get the actors used to each other, give them some back story to who their character is. But also, rather than spout off pseudo-scientific dialogue have them know the important parts they need to say but ad-lib the rest—give the characters personality. And lastly, be consistent. Why is the captain neatly groomed but some other people have long shaggy hair? I’ve followed the development of this episode for some time, but honestly the problems are so big I could never get into it

I was really looking forward to enjoying this new new episode. I like the music (as told before: the modified TOS theme), costumes and equipment are cool and used with much love to the datail, but: the acting is absolutely horrible!!! MY good, acting is difficult, but this is the worstest (!) I’ve ever seen. I can live with sound problems and, let’s say simple effects, BUT the dialogues are stupid, way too long and do sound like recited. I am sorry but this destroys everything!
