A Closer Look At The New Space Battleship Yamato

By Joshua Tyler | Updated

Released in 1979 here in America as Star Blazers, the Japanese anime series Battleship Yamato eventually became a sort of underground hit. But as much as people love the show in the United States, it’s much, much bigger over in Japan. So it makes sense that they’re resurrecting it.

A new version of Battleship Yamato is being done under the supervision of Izubuchi, the original animator and designer of a lot of the things you saw in the first incarnation of the anime. They’re sticking with pretty much the same story too. It still involves Earth’s last space battlecruiser on a desperate mission across the galaxy to bring back a way to save Earth, while under attack from a group of war mongering aggressors. This version is called Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

They’ve just released production art for the newly designed Battleship Yamato on the show’s official site, and that too seems pretty much the same. Check it out…

Like the plot, little has changed about the ship from the original version. It’s still the same Yamato we’ve always known and loved. Here’s how it looked back in the 70s, you’ll see what I mean…

Bottom line this is going to be pretty much the same show, except with updated animation (which it sorely needs) and hopefully with some of the awkward, 70’s disco music replaced. All the best things about Yamato, and there were a lot of them, remain in place. This may be worth your time.

Here’s the full trailer for the new series…
