Dredd Producer Details What Has To Happen To Make Dredd 2 A Reality

When it was released in September of 2012, Dredd was an absolute bomb at the box office. But the movie found a new life as people discovered it on the home video market, where it broke sales records and gathered a rabid fan base. Ever since, people have been clamoring for a sequel to the ultraviolent actioner. While that’s very unlikely to happen, producer Adi Shankar recently released this video that explains all of the things that would need to fall into place for Dredd 2 to actually happen. The things Shankar, who also produced that recent grim Power Rangers short and Dredd: Superfiend, says aren’t necessarily all Dredd 2 specific. What he does, and why I find this video is so interesting, is give you a quick and dirty lesson of the basics of film financing, like film finance for dummies. And I am certainly a dummy when it comes to money.
To be honest, I can’t tell you how true any of this is because I have zero experience in anything that even resembles making a movie, but this provides a perspective of production most of us don’t often see. We know that a big star or a brand name director are often keys to getting a movie rolling, but Shankar breaks down the why of the matter, as well as other factors that figure into the equation. As he says, “The guy who dresses up like The Crow is going to give you a lesson in film finance.”
It’s also easy to forget that Dredd is an independent movie. When you think of comic book adaptations, we’re used to massive scale Marvel movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron or big DC projects like Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. To put it in perspective, Guardians of the Galaxy had budget of $170 million while Dredd cost $50 million. That’s still an ass-ton of money, but compared to other movies of this ilk, it’s just a fraction.
The basic gist of this video is that a great number of things are going to go down for Dredd 2 to ever happen, and watching, you can’t help but think that is never going to happen. Unless they get the Rock. I’m fine if Dredd 2 never happens, but I would watch the hell out of that movie.
