Dolph Lundgren Taunts Zombies In This Battle Of The Damned Clip

In reality, I probably shouldn’t be as excited as I am for Battle of the Damned. Direct to video sci-fi/horror joints starring Dolph Lundgren are not exactly renowned for their overwhelming quality. Still, if you throw Ivan Drago, zombies, and robots into the description of the same movie, I find it hard not to get at least a little excited. That probably says something about my personality that I should be worried about, but this is neither the time nor the place to get into my personal shortcomings. If Battle of the Damned sounds like a movie you’d be into, you probably will, and if it doesn’t, you probably won’t dig it at all. This new clip won’t change your mind either way, but it will likely solidify your previous positions.

This video, from Beyond Hollywood, is action based, which, after all, is what we want out of this movie in the first place. Lundgren books it through an auto wrecking yard, zombies hot on his tail, trying to find a way out. He does, of course, it wouldn’t be much of a movie if you get to see the main character die in a clip that’s released before the movie even hits the open market. There’s that moment that’s in every zombie movie, where the throng of the undead, starving for man flesh, run into a gate, desperately reaching through, but unable to grab their prey.

Battle of the Damned also features one of my favorite low-budget action movie tropes: the hero with the ridiculously spot on tough guy name. Think of monikers like Robert Rath (Sylvester Stallone in Assassins), Phillip Savage (Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hard Corps), or Chuck Slaughter (Chuck Norris in Karate Cop), among others. Lundgren, who has sported his share of awesome names, plays a man called Max Gatling, which is pretty damn fantastic in my opinion. With a name like that, you’re already well on your way to certified badass status.

Here’s the official Battle of the Damned synopsis:

When a deadly virus is accidentally released into a major city, its population is quarantined by a military blockade. And for a wealthy industrialist desperate to rescue his daughter from inside the rabid chaos, his only hope is former commando Max Gatling (Dolph Lundgren, The Expendables, Ambushed). Now Gatling has one day to bust in, blast through hordes of the undead, find the girl, and hunt for a way to get them both out alive. But will a small band of survivors and an army of killer robots turn his mission into maximum slaughter? Matt Doran (The Matrix) and David Field (Chopper) co-star in this intense action shocker that TheActionElite.com calls “awesome badass…one of the craziest movies of Dolph’s career and arguably one of his best!”

The story sounds more than a little reminiscent of Escape from New York, but, you know, with zombies and robots. And as we all know, robots make everything better.

Battle of the Damned hits Blu-ray and DVD February 18.
