Continuum Season Three Will Time Travel Onto Your Television In April

Sci-fi fans have a lot to look forward this spring and summer, and I’m just talking about on the TV side of things, upcoming movies are a whole different animal. BBC America’s Orphan Black is returning for season number two, as is the CBS drama Under the Dome. America’s Most Watched Network will also give us the new Steven Spielberg-produced, Halle Berry-starring Extant. But we just found out that before any of these, we’ll get to see season three of Continuum on Syfy.
The network just announced that new episodes will begin airing on Friday, April 4, in a 10 pm time slot, and they also delivered this quick new promo video. While this date isn’t far off in reality, it is still three weeks after Canadian audiences will be able to see these installments on Showcase. Lucky Canucks.
Though it took a while to find itself, hits its stride, and all of those other clichés, over the past two seasons, Continuum has turned itself into one of more interesting genre shows on the boob tube. To prepare audiences for the upcoming adventures of Kiera Cameron and friends, Syfy also let loose a description of what we can expect from the upcoming episodes. Just a warning, you should stop reading now if you haven’t finished season two yet, because things get pretty damn spoilier-y from here on out. Unless you have no intention of finishing season two. If you plan on jumping right into season three and want to catch up, by all means, read on.
Season 3 of Continuum amplifies the mythology, technology and the stakes of time travel to an intense and personal level. At the end of Season 2, Alec Sadler made the Earth-shattering decision to hijack Kiera’s (Rachel Nichols) chance to get home, in order to save Emily, the girl he loves, from certain death. This act of desperation not only jettisoned Alec into the near past, but it condemned Kiera to incarceration by the Freelancers, who are ‘collecting’ time travelers in order to protect history.
Now, Kiera must face the consequences of Alec’s betrayal and somehow escape the Freelancers. Even if she can, has Alec’s decision to time travel already changed the future in ways Kiera couldn’t even imagine? What will Kiera sacrifice to ultimately survive – and how will Liber8 factor into this challenge?
Time travel tends to have a ripple effect in situations like these—at least in movies and TV—and it will be interesting to see if Continuum chooses to deal with this or not. All of this fooling around in the past is bound to have some enormous consequences on the future, and the farther back they start jumping, the more wide ranging the impact. Kiera desperately wants to return home to her time and her family, but how is that going to look if and when she does? At some point all of this interference is going to cause drastic changes. Hell, you can even envision a scenario where a character could even cause themselves to cease to exist. Then you’re really in a world of trouble.
