The Best Star Wars Game Is Now Completely Free

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

The Star Wars franchise has seen plenty of gaming releases in the past four decades, with quite a few fantastic gaming entries in the franchise. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are typically the first to come to mind, but Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is also often considered among the best—and it’s now completely free for a limited time.

Amazon Prime Gaming makes Star Wars: The Force Unleashed free for members to purchase until August 14.

Amazon is offering heavy discounts and gifts to its Prime members as part of its Prime Day, and this also includes gaming titles on Prime Gaming. And, as part of this year’s offering, Amazon is gifting one of the best Star Wars games ever, the 2008 action-adventure Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, developed and published by LucasArts for several platforms.

Unfortunately for console owners, the deal is only available to PC gamers through August 14. Console players will still have to pay full price to acquire the title.

Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed bridges the first two Star Wars trilogies, acting as an origin story for both the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Civil War depicted in the original trilogy.

Interestingly enough, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was released on the sixth- and seventh-generation consoles and a whole slew of gaming hardware the current gaming generations know nothing off.

Of course, we’re referring to Java-equipped mobile phone handhelds, as well as N-Gage (Nokia’s crossover between cellphones and handheld gaming consoles), Nintendo DS, and the legendary PlayStation Portable, which is bound to receive yet another successor, at least in a “spiritual” sense—the PSP was an engineering marvel for its time and not a streaming device.

In terms of narrative and continuity, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed bridges the first two Star Wars trilogies, acting as an origin story for both the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Civil War depicted in the original trilogy.

It introduced a new protagonist, Starkiller, a powerful Force user trained by Darth Vader in secrecy. As the protagonist, you’re tasked with two things: hunt down Jedi survivors of the Great Jedi Purge, and plant the seeds of what would become the Rebel Alliance, which Vader plans to exploit to overthrow Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious.

However, Starkiller begins questioning his own morality and slowly redeems himself throughout the game. It’s truly a fantastic narrative, and we recommend it to all Star Wars fans, especially to those who haven’t played it yet. Unfortunately, following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was pushed out of official canon into the non-canonical Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Remastered

Still, it was a well-received game, with many praising its story, voice acting, combat, and physics; linear gameplay received some criticism, but what did you expect from a 2008 gaming title?

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed later received ports to Microsoft Windows in 2009. In 2022, Asypr took a Nintendo Wii version of the game, enhanced the gameplay, and provided a full remaster, which was subsequently released on the Nintendo Switch gaming handheld.

Those interested in obtaining this game free of charge, at least on the PC, can do so by subscribing to Prime Gaming, which follows the footsteps of Epic Games when it comes to freebies, offering free releases every two weeks or so.
