Writer Mike Judge has been viewed by many as being at the forefront of pop culture for over thirty years. Taking audiences through many journeys in animation with King of the Hill, he moved into film projects with the live action comedies Office Space, Idiocracy, and Extract. Transitioning back to television, Judge created the successful HBO comedy Silicon Valley, which ran for six seasons. Now, one of his earliest creations is getting a reboot with Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe.

As reported by Deadline, Paramount+ has revived the franchise for its streaming platform, set to debut on June 23, 2022. Beavis And Butt-head Do The Universe is the second revival to come out of the unlikely franchise, after MTV tried to rescue the series by bringing it back for one season back in 2011. This time, Paramount+ has revealed a trailer for the new project, which will be a feature film written and directed by Mike Judge himself. You can watch the trailer below.

When Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe premieres on Paramount+ this month, the characters will be introduced to a new generation of audiences eager for some vulgarity. The concept about two teenage slackers who seem apathetic and come off as stupid has been challenged in the past, but the lowbrow sense of humor and Mike Judge’s voiceovers have won over many just long enough to create a new film with everyone’s favorite good-for-nothings. The trailer depicts the two characters going off into space, possibly seen by many Texas natives as an oppositional viewpoint to Richard Linklater’s recent nostalgic film Apollo 10/12: A Space Age Childhood, which premiered on Netflix last April.

The initial incarnation of Beavis and Butt-Head was introduced to American viewers on MTV in the 1990s. Instantly becoming a hit for the network, the series generated merchandise sold to fans based on its popularity, and helped to spawn interest in a film version entitled Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. The film adaptation was also written and directed by Judge, and grossed over $63 million at the box office. With this new film of Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe, Mike Judge is bringing back characters that haven’t been seen onscreen for over a decade, but from the looks of the trailer, it seems these two have a lot of growing up still to do.

While the addition of Beavis And Butt-Head Do The Universe to the franchise may be welcome to many viewers, the characters of Beavis and Butt-Head were once seen as annoying to those that didn’t typically watch the original series. Some critics at the time were impressed with the franchise’s seemingly satirical look at society, according to Roger Ebert’s review of the first film as an example. But many others felt the series lacked appeal, especially because of the lewd humor and jokes perceived throughout the series and film adaptation. For this new film, it will be interesting to see how these characters have changed, if at all, and what sort of fun adventures they get into when they take a rocket into outer space.
