If you’re living in the city and considering putting a down payment on a house in the suburbs, there are a couple of things you need to worry about. First and foremost, you don’t want nosy neighbors or the HOA president getting all up in your business because your lawn is overgrown by half an inch. And after watching The Ice Cream Truck, you may have second thoughts about the local Ice Cream Man driving slowly through the neighborhood and watching your every move while you’re unpacking your belongings and settling in.

The Ice Cream Truck

The Ice Cream Truck centers on Mary (Deanna Russo), an aspiring writer and mother of two who moves back to her hometown to settle down with her family. Mary’s husband and children, however, won’t be showing up for another two weeks, as they have to tie up some loose ends in the city before finalizing the move on their end. Bored out of her mind and waiting for her furniture and belongings to be delivered, Mary is living in an empty suburban house, and has to deal with her new neighbors by herself.

Robbing The Cradle

Mary is also going through a sort of midlife crisis in The Ice Cream Truck. After getting invited by one of the neighborhood moms to celebrate her son’s high school graduation, Mary meets Max (John Redlinger), the graduate in question. Mary and Max quickly form a romantic relationship because Max is attracted to Mary, and Mary is reminded of the more carefree days of her youth whenever she crosses his path.

The Villain

Meanwhile, The Ice Cream Truck introduces its antagonist, a nameless ice cream truck driver (Emil Johnsen) who only carries traditional flavors and has a propensity for violence. When Max’s girlfriend Tracy (Bailey Anne Borders) goes missing, we know that she’s been murdered by the Ice Cream Man, but Max assumes she’s not returning his calls because she’s mad at him. It quickly becomes clear that the Ice Cream Man is about to terrorize the neighborhood, as he’s only beginning to ramp up his killing spree.

A Straight Up Slasher

Sometimes, you want to watch a movie with a little bit more nuance, but this movie is a treat of the highest order because it’s a straightforward slasher that leaves very little room for interpretation. The only thing that I find hard to believe is that a suspicious ice cream truck in a neighborhood populated by the worst kind of helicopter parents is able to freely roll around throughout the day and night without the authorities getting called to check the driver’s credentials. This film also loses some points because we don’t ever learn anything about the driver’s backstory or why he’s so hellbent on terrorizing the neighborhood.

GFR SCORE

While The Ice Cream Truck is somewhat lacking on the logical front, I don’t seek out movies like this for their rock-solid storytelling. I just want to be entertained, and I’ve got to say that my taste buds were tickled by the this Megan Elizabeth Freels Johnson horror comedy set in the suburbs. If you plan on having a horror double-feature anytime soon, I’d recommend starting with a more disturbing film like It Comes at Night, and using this one to cleanse your palate so you don’t go to bed having nightmares.

The Ice Cream Truck is a fun slasher that any horror fan will appreciate, and you can currently stream the title for free on Tubi.
