There are plenty of times when actors go above and beyond for their auditions, and Jamie Dornan apparently took quite the initiative when he went out for the role of Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Dornan recently talked to the Happy Sad Confused podcast about his audition process, admitting that he actually showed up in Superman pajamas to show his commitment to getting the role. He said, “I wore my own suit there,” adding, “They were Superman pajamas, they weren’t an actual suit.”

Unfortunately for him, this extra effort wasn’t quite enough to nab him the role, which ultimately went to Henry Cavill. Then again, it’s possible that things worked out the best for Jamie Dornan, considering even Cavill has been booted from the role now, albeit years later.

“I wore my own suit there. They were Superman pajamas, they weren’t an actual suit.”

The newest actor who will be suiting up as Superman, hopefully not in pajamas, will be David Corenswet in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy film, which is set for a 2025 release.

Although Jamie Dornan didn’t end up getting the Superman role, he would nab a role in a major franchise just a couple of years later in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise as Christian Grey. The film did end up making boatloads of money, though it was a bit of a failure critically.

However, it’s not something that Dornan didn’t really see coming, as he told Happy Sad Confused in the same interview, “I knew that it came with all that baggage… that the realty was it would make a ton of money and the fans would love and the critics would despise it,” adding “Movies that are made for the fans that fans love can be seen as a success.

Jamie Dornan has had quite a turnaround since then, at least from a critical perspective. Particularly in his 2021 Oscar-winning film Belfast, which portrayed a coming-of-age story of a young boy in a working-class family in 1960s Belfast. Kenneth Branagh, who wrote and directed the film, took home the Best Original Screenplay trophy at the Academy Awards that year.

“I knew that it came with all that baggage… that the realty was it would make a ton of money and the fans would love and the critics would despise it. Movies that are made for the fans that fans love can be seen as a success.”

Although Jamie Dornan didn’t get to star in a big action blockbuster in Man of Steel, he did get to show off his action chops in the recently released Heart of Stone. The film stars Gal Gadot as international intelligence agent Rachel Stone, who takes on a mission to protect an artificial intelligence system from falling into dangerous hands.

Heart of Stone is directed by Tom Harper with a screenplay by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder and also stars Alia Bhatt, Sophie Okonedo, Jing Lusi, and Matthias Schweighofer.

What’s Next For Jamie Dornan?

Jamie Dornan will also reunite with his Belfast director Kenneth Branagh in the upcoming Agatha Christie adaptation A Haunting In Venice. Branagh is directing the film and also reprises his role as the detective Hercule Poirot, who attempts to solve a murder at a seance in post-World War II Venice.

The cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Kelly Reilly, Tina Fey, Emma Laird, Camille Cottin, Kyle Allen, Riccardo Scamarcio, Jude Hill, Amir El-Masry, Ali Khan, and Fernando Piloni.

You can check out Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan in Heart of Stone today, as the film is now streaming on Netflix. We’ll see Dornan on the big screen again on September 15, when A Haunting in Venice hits theaters. You can also see Dornan in the Max series The Tourist, which has its first season now available to stream.
