Andor Writer Confirms How The Star Wars Series Will End
The showrunner for Star Wars: Andor has revealed the ending of the show before it's even started on Disney+
The latest Disney+ series to take fans to a story a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away is Andor. The 12-episode Rogue One prequel starring Diego Luna as Rebel Spy Cassian Andor kicks off with a three-episode premiere on September 21st. However, The Hollywood Reporter writes that before season one has even started, showrunner Tony Gilroy confirms how the Star Wars Andor series will end.
Earlier this week, fans were given an extended glimpse of what to expect from Star Wars Andor as the first full trailer for the series was released along with the knowledge of the three-episode premiere in September. However, Gilroy told The Hollywood Reporter just where Andor is heading and when we will get there. “Our last scene of the show, our 24th episode, will walk the audience directly into Rogue One and directly into the first scene of Rogue One,” says Gilroy.
The fact that Andor, a Rogue One prequel is heading towards a climax that leads it straight into the events of the latter isn’t exactly a shock, but there are several intriguing elements to Gilroy’s statement that are worth unpacking. Firstly, the admission that Andor is receiving two 12-episode long seasons. In the past, rumors circling Andor had suggested that the show was originally set to have a whopping five seasons, which was then cut down to three. Gilroy’s confirmation that Andor is capped at 24 episodes may disappoint some fans who were expecting more.
Secondly, the ending of Andor provides a nice symmetry with Rogue One, whose final scenes led directly into Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The final intriguing facet to this statement is how precisely Gilroy has revealed the way in which Andor will end. As previously stated, it is somewhat obvious that the Star Wars Andor series will build up towards Rogue One, but doesn’t revealing the precise mechanics take some of the fun and intrigue out of it?
If you thought that revealing the closing moments of Star Wars Andor was something that showrunner Tony Gilroy was worried about, think again. Gilroy is confident that fans will love Andor enough to remain hooked on the story, despite already knowing its conclusion. Gilroy said, “We’re all living in a prequel, we’re all gonna die. You can watch a movie for the third time and even if you just saw it six months before … you’re invested in it if you love it.” Gilroy is correct to a certain extent, after all, with the Star Wars prequel films, fans knew they were heading to Anakin’s inevitable transformation into Lord Vader. So indeed the fun part of Andor and the one that will hopefully be keeping fans engaged is the journey that Diego Luna’s character goes on to take him to the events of Rogue One.
Star Wars Andor looks set to be one of the darker grittier stories to be told within the saga, full of Rebel spies, the Empire growing in stature and the conflict between the two. Andor has an ensemble cast to help tell its gritty story. The cast includes the likes of Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma. Other cast members include Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) and Alex Lawther (The End of the F***ing World). Fans don’t have long to wait to see how this cast of rogues enables Cassian Andor to start his journey toward the events of Rogue One.
