Squid Game actor O Yeong-su is facing criminal charges for an alleged sexual assault that occurred in 2017. Though Yeong-su was originally indicted in November 2022, the case closed last April without any charges being brought against the 79-year old actor. Though he maintains his innocence, prosecutors requested a one-year prison sentence for the incident, and a subsequent ruling trial will be held on March 15.

The Charges

A member of O Yeong-su’s theater troupe claimed he made inappropriate sexual advances toward her. The victim claimed the Squid Game actor groped and kissed her while the two were alone outside, which led her to file her complaint with police in December 2021.

The Arguments

Yeong-Su’s defense attorney doesn’t think the alleged victim has a solid case against the Squid Game actor, and suggests that the evidence doesn’t quite line up. Working only with the victim’s recounting of events, the attorney suggests that the time, place, and situation aren’t enough to reach a guilty verdict. The prosecuting attorneys, on the other hand, have reason to believe that he made his advances after a night of drinking with the victim based on her claims.

The prosecution claims that Yeong-su showed no remorse for his actions, which is why they want to punish him so harshly. In addition to the proposed prison sentence, the victim’s legal council is pushing for Yeoung-su to face employment restrictions if the charges stick. The actor’s potential future with Squid Game could be jeopardized.

Does Yeong-su Have A Squid Game Future?

If it’s proven without a doubt that Yeong-su is guilty for carrying out this alleged act of sexual misconduct, then his future with Squid Game would need to be reassessed. Whether this will have an effect on the upcoming second season remains to be seen, however. Fans of the show are quick to point out that Il-nam (Player 001) died in season 1, but there are fan theories suggesting that he faked his death, which could lead to a return.

Season 2 Is On The Way

Squid Game was renewed for a second season in June 2022, and filming wrapped in 2023. The upcoming season is slated for a 2024 release. At the time of this writing, we can’t confirm with certainty that Yeong-su will be featured in season 2.

A Runaway Hit

Squid Game became an unexpected hit when it saw its Netflix premiere in 2021. Universally praised for its depiction of wealth disparity in a dystopian setting, the series garnered a 95 percent critical score against an audience score of 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The Korean Drama made waves by becoming the most watched show on the streaming platform with over 1.65 billion hours within its first 28 days.

In the United States, Squid Game reached over 3.26 billion minutes watched between September 27 and October 3 2021, making it the sixth program to reach over three billion minutes watched in a single week since Nielsen media ratings were implemented for shows available exclusively through streaming.
