George Takei’s sassy, talking time machine (Free Birds)
From a quick survey of prominent reviews, I seem to be in the vast minority of grown up people who actually enjoyed Free Birds, the animated adventures of two time-travelling turkeys who go back to the first Thanksgiving in order to get turkey off the menu. I’m okay with that; my taste is, admittedly, questionable. Free Birds isn’t the best kids movie you’ve ever seen — or even close to the best of the year — but the movie has enough earnest energy and quirks to remain interesting, and it’s a damn sight better than some of the dreck that passes as kids’ fare these days.
One of the biggest perks of sitting through this with your kids is experiencing Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei, as a sassy, artificially intelligent time machine named Steve. That alone would be enough to help me get through just about any movie ever made, but the fact that he’s really funny and a total smartass only sweetens the deal. You can listen Takei say just about anything with that wry, deadpan voice of his, but there’s something about mocking two anthropomorphic fowl that you’ll want to witness for yourself.
