Carrie Fisher Says She Was Joking About Returning For Star Wars: Episode VII

By Brent McKnight | Updated

Damn it, Carrie Fisher.

Hey, remember the other day when everyone was all abuzz because Carrie Fisher said that she was definitely reprising her Princess Leia role in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII? Turns out we may have jumped the gun a bit on reporting that tidbit as concrete fact. The 56-year-old actress and author is now backpedaling away from her earlier statement.

When asked point blank by Palm Beach Illustrated if she would return for the J.J. Abrams-directed continuation of the Star Wars saga, Fisher’s response was a simple, “Yes.”

Now CNN has received an official comment on the matter from one of her representatives, and the word is not exactly what fans were hoping for. “She was joking,” the rep says. “Nothing has been announced.”

With that simple statement you can almost hear the sound of Star Wars fanatics everywhere deflating a little bit. After all, with Fisher back as Leia, it wasn’t much of a leap to assume that both Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill might reprise their Han Solo and Luke Skywalker characters as well.

Oh well. Can’t say we didn’t see this coming at least a little bit. It all seemed to come a little too easily, didn’t it? And most of the interview was tongue-in-cheek. She went on to tease the idea of Princess Leia being in an intergalactic old folks’ home.

So now it’s back to wild speculation, rumor, innuendo, and pure guesswork as we wait for Michael Arndt (Oblivion, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) to finish up the screenplay. We’re still hopeful that they’ll be able to deliver the new installment by 2015, the date they originally estimated, but Abrams has already said that date might shift back.

This is the way.
