Snowpiercer

For his English-language debut, Korean director Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Mother) is taking a stab at apocalyptic science fiction. His Snowpiercer is barreling down on us, though in a vague kind of way, since we still don’t have a solid release date. Still, this is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. Many people thought the film might premiere at Cannes, but since that didn’t happen, we’re left waiting. But until we know something more concrete, we have the new cast photo above.

The image shows most of the primary players, all gathered together for one group pic. There’s Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton, Ewen Bremner, Chris Evans, Ko Asung, and Song Kang-ho, all lined up. A few key pieces are missing: namely Ed Harris and John Hurt. You may also notice that Tilda Swinton is wearing a shoe on top of her head. I have no idea why, but there’s that. Maybe that’s become the style in this particular iteration of the future. Then again, perhaps she’s just bat-shit crazy and walks around with old shoes on her head. She certainly looks a little bit nuts.

Snowpiercer is set in a world where experiments designed to reverse global warning have kicked off a new ice age, one that kills off almost all life on Earth. The few survivors circle the frozen wastes in a train powered by a perpetual motion engine. Within the confines of the vehicle, a rigid caste system has developed. The wealthy live in luxury, while the lower classes are stuffed together in cramped, dirty living conditions. As you might imagine, this doesn’t sit well with everyone, and revolution seethes.
