Rick and Morty: The Anime Reveals Villain We Should Have Seen Coming

Tammy Guterman has been a villain since day one, so why would we be surprised to see her as the villain in Rick and Morty: The Anime? Perhaps because she flew under the radar so well. Or maybe we were just focused on all the other chaos taking place in this multiverse of madness.

From what we can tell, Rick and Morty: The Anime will not continue any storylines from the original series.

Rick and Morty has been a much-beloved series on The Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim for several years now. Over a decade ago, show creator Justin Roiland wrote and directed a short, animated parody film of Back to the Future for Channel 101, a short-film festival. One of the festival’s co-founders, Community creator Dan Harmon, liked the film so much that he and Roiland conceived of a long-running series to grow from it.

The show has now become so popular that Rick and Morty: The Anime, a Japanese anime spinoff, is set to release soon.

Rick and Morty is still running on Adult Swim. The show began as a commentary on the relationship between good and evil, good and bad, or maybe just naive and jaded. Rick Sanchez is a mad scientist genius living with his daughter, Beth Smith, her husband, Jerry Smith, and their children, Summer, aged 17, and Morty, aged 14. The primary focus of the show revolves around the older, jaded Rick and his anxious, nervous grandson, Morty.

Tammy Guterman has been a villain since day one, so why would we be surprised to see her as the villain in Rick and Morty: The Anime?

We cannot be certain what Rick and Morty: The Anime will focus on. Why? The plot twists in Rick and Morty are myriad and mind-boggling. Rick and Morty travel through time and space and into alternate dimensions with various recurring characters and their alter egos, proving that in the world of science fiction, pretty much anything is possible.

Now, we have Rick and Morty: The Anime, written and directed by Takashi Sano out of Studio Deen, Sola Entertainment, and Telecom Animation Film. The series is an anime style adaptation of Rick and Morty, dubbed in Japanese with English subtitles. It has been officially ordered by Adult Swim and is expected to be released in 2024.

When we first met Tammy, long before Rick and Morty: The Anime was conceived of, she was a seemingly sweet and innocent teenage girl to befriend Summer Smith.

Sano has already directed two other Rick and Morty shorts, “Summer Meets God” and “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider,” to critical acclaim. From what we can tell, Rick and Morty: The Anime will not continue any storylines from the original series. Rather, it will draw inspiration from it and place its own anime twist upon it.

What we know for sure is that we can expect to see Tammy Guterman return as a many-legged villain and square off against Space Beth. No real surprises there, of course.

Rick and Morty: The Anime

When we first met Tammy, long before Rick and Morty: The Anime was conceived of, she was a seemingly sweet and innocent teenage girl to befriend Summer Smith. Before long, however, Tammy revealed herself to have been fooling everyone all along. She is actually a member of the Galactic Federation, out to catch Rick, Morty, and as many other enemies of the Federation as possible.

Over time, Tammy has revealed herself to be cruel, cunning, and without morality or remorse. So, of course, she would be the villain! And yet, of course, we didn’t see it coming. That’s the joy of science fiction, after all. Anything can happen.
