The 1984 movie Repo Man, which has become a cult classic after its release, is now getting a sequel. This unexpected news dropped nearly 40 years after the original movie was released, and the long-awaited sequel, Repo Man 2, is made by the director of the original, with the new leading star Kiowa Gordon.

The Wages Of Beer

The sequel, titled Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, will be directed by Alex Cox, who seeks to deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling in a rather absurd world of repo men in the modern age. Mixing repo men for whom nothing changed in the industry, with new, biometrically locked, and self-driving cars and potential extraterrestrial threats, is bound to be hilarious.

Picking Up Where We Left Them

Repo Man 2’s story is set to pick up following the events of the original movie, with Otto finding the mysterious 1967 Malibu, which is connected to alien sightings and carries a toxic substance in its truck. In the original, Otto and Miller have driven off into the infinities of space and time. In the sequel, the world around them has flashed into the present, but time hasn’t passed for Otto at all, which means that he’s transported into his relative future—our present.

Otto Still Looks To The Past

This means that Otto only aged some 90 minutes over the span of 40 years in Repo Man 2. Instead of driving countless nights through bad neighborhoods looking for cars, he now spends nights doing the same thing online, and instead of hot-wiring a vehicle, Otto now has to hack the onboard computer and direct the self-driving vehicle to the repo yard or the sheriff’s substation. Yet, despite all the excitement that the future has brought, it would seem that Otto still yearns for past simplicities.

The New Otto

Kiowa Gordon, best known as Embry Call in the Twilight movies, will portray Otto in Repo Man 2, whom Emilio Estevez played in the original 1984 movie. Cox is currently presenting the idea for the movie to buyers at the European Film Market, which takes place during the ongoing Berlin Film Festival, in hopes of securing the funds to get the movie made. The whole project is currently in pre-production, and the producers are currently working out a project start time and production schedule.

The Original Repo Man Is A Beloved Cult Classic

The original Repo Man was a Reagan-era satire about consumerism and the Atomic Age that was loved for its punk rock soundtrack, while its funny and strange combination of workplace comedy, fear of nuclear annihilation, and sci-fi made it the cult classics we know today. The movie gained widespread praise upon its release, and it’s widely considered one of the best movies of 1984. It currently has a 98-percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82 score on Metacritic, which indicates universal acclaim, giving Repo Man 2 a tough act to follow.

The fact that the original director is behind the wheel makes the Repo Man 2 more promising. Unfortunately, the film is still in pre-production and has no scheduled release date or window.
