Powerpuff Girls was set to get a live-action reboot in the Arrowverse which, on its own, was rather surprising news. Considering this was originally a cartoon about three crime-fighting kindergartners named Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup, it didn’t exactly ring out like something we’d need a new and updated version for. That was the plan, but it’s being tabled for now because of something you probably wouldn’t expect. According to Variety, the live-action Powerpuff Girls needs to be rewritten and reshot because it was just a bit too, well, mature.

The word from Variety that Powerpuff Girls needs an overhaul comes in conjunction with the show’s script being leaked online. To say the dialogue and action don’t exactly line up the original Cartoon Network show would be a massive understatement. We are catching up with the trio later on in life, in their early 20’s when they are reflecting back some on their halcyon kindergarten days and maybe feeling more than a little angst.

But this Powerpuff Girls script does take things to another, well, mature level when it comes to where these girls are in their lives. Not that it’s necessarily inaccurate for how 20-somethings talk and spend their time, but rather from a branding perspective they might have taken it a bit too far. Check out some of the leaked script sections that are sitting out there on Twitter.

These sections from the script are apparently from the pilot (which was already shot) and it doesn’t take long to figure out the tone they are going for in the Powerpuff Girls reboot. The first one crams in a bunch of social media references that feel a little hamfisted before getting into a bit more salacious territory with the threat of leaking nudes, a “fancy slut” reference and then a post-coital barge in on Buttercup.

Then we also get a reference to a possible adult movie that Bubbles has put out in the interim between her crime-stopper days and her now adult life. Again, I don’t think anyone expected to catch up with these girls being saints as they get into adulthood, but considering there would be some viewership carryover from the original show, this might have surprised even the most non-prude Powerpuff Girls fan out there.

Powerpuff Girls folks took to Twitter to react to some of the leaked script details. It wasn’t all bad, but needless to say some folks were more than a little surprised.

According to this latest report, Powerpuff Girls is now going to be reworked on an off-cycle timeline meaning they are going to take a beat and figure out how to revamp some of the story. The cast of Chloe Bennett, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault will stay on board, and presumably, so will Diablo Cody who penned the pilot script. I would suspect things will take a different tone and narrative arc the second time around if this was the reaction to the first try at it.

Powerpuff Girls has enough of a fanbase (if Twitter is any indication) that there remain incentives to get something passable and workable up on the small screen. When we do I suspect it will have significantly less sex and fewer references to social media. But that’s just a guess for how the next pilot turns out.
