With nearly 60 years in the film industry, Morgan Freeman has just put another notch in his credit belt. According to Screen Daily, the award-winning actor will be following up on the recent news of his casting in the Taylor Sheridan-created series Lioness with a new film credit opposite Luke Hemsworth in an action thriller titled Gunner. The movie will see Freeman stepping into a villainous role which is always a treat for audiences.

In Gunner, Luke Hemsworth stars as Special Ops veteran Lee Gunner who, seeking a little relaxing family time, takes his two young sons on a fishing trip. The trio is enjoying their peace and quiet, but when the boys wander away from their father, they inadvertently come face-to-face with a drug-running operation that puts them in immediate danger. After discovering that his kids have been kidnapped by the son of a jailed drug lord (Morgan Freeman), Gunner will push himself to the limit to make sure his boys make it home safe and sound.

Because all of the Hemsworth siblings and Morgan Freeman have been so involved in filmmaking, specifically of the action variety over the years, one would think that the honor of starring next to the iconic Freeman would have already been nabbed by Luke’s younger brothers Chris or Liam Hemsworth. However, this isn’t the case with Gunner marking a first for the famed family of Australian men to partner up with the living legend. The feature will be helmed by Kickboxer: Retaliation director Dimitri Logothetis who is working from a screenplay penned by The Fast and Furious franchise scribe and character creator, Gary Scott Thompson.

As for Morgan Freeman, Gunner is just the next project in a laundry list of titles that audiences can expect to soon see the Seven star shine in. He’ll next appear opposite a cast set to include Florence Pugh and Molly Shannon in the Zach Braff-written and directed comedy-drama, A Good Person. Due out in late March, the feature will center around the bond formed between a woman who lost her fiance and the man who would have been her grandfather-in-law.

After working alongside Cole Hauser in last year’s noir-thriller, The Minute You Wake Up Dead, Morgan Freeman will be rejoining the Yellowstone actor in a George Gallo action-thriller titled Muti. In it, Freeman will play an anthropologist who is a detective’s (Hauser) only hope in tracking down a serial killer. The killer’s pattern is murdering his victims using the tribal ritual known as Muti, forcing the detective to form a partnership with the mysterious and possibly dangerous anthropologist.

Finally, Morgan Freeman will appear opposite Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games franchise) in the sci-fi flick, 57 Seconds. A story of revenge, the film will see its main characters using the power of a time-traveling ring to travel 57 seconds into the past. Currently filming, 57 Seconds is directed by Rusty Cundieff and is based on Edwin Charles Tubb’s story Fallen Angel

As of right now, Gunner is gunning to get cameras rolling this spring in Alabama. No other casting announcements have been made, but judging by the synopsis, Morgan Freeman and Luke Hemsworth will be the two major names in the production. No release window has been set, but stay tuned for more information.
