When we finally get to see the Marvel Eternals movie, it’s been promised that we’ll never see the Marvel Cinematic Universe the same. That’s a big promise. The writer and director for the movie has said that it’s Marvel’s biggest risk yet. What makes this movie such a big deal? While there is an impressive cast list, and the characters are ones mostly only familiar to fans of the comics, one could easily argue that what’s going to make The Eternals such a big deal is the Celestials. These characters have been briefly mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy, but they’re easy to miss.

Head of Marvel, Kevin Fiege, has promised that the Celestials are aware of the Avengers, are a big part of where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going, and will be changing what we know about the MCU. These are characters we want to know. And now, we have our first these Marvel Eternals characters by way of a Twitter post from @EternalsTalks. The post shows three of the Celestials. They appear to be pictured on some merchandise for the upcoming movie and are our first peek at how the MCU will be depicting the characters. Take a look below.

This take for the new Marvel Eternals is fairly different from how we’ve seen Celestials depicted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Previously, we met Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. The character is Peter Quill’s father and claims to be a Celestial. He’s played by Kurt Russell and while we see him in other forms, we typically see him presented as a humanoid.

We’ve also seen part of a Celestial corpse in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 1. In that film, we saw Knowhere. In Guardians, it’s explained that this is the severed head of a Celestial. It was mined for parts. In the film, it’s a place where the Guardians attempt to sell the orb. It’s been rumored that in the Marvel Eternals movie we will not only learn the beginnings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but get more details on the origins of Knowhere.

The Celestials’ history dates back thousands of years. Because of this, there is no telling what we might learn about the Asgardians or Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Any of the stories we’ve been told so far could gain new understanding through the stories we could learn in Marvel Eternals, so big game-changing events are going to be expected. It’s unknown whether the forms we’re seeing on the merchandise above will be what the characters look like for the whole movie. Will the Celestials mimic humanoid shapes as Ego has? From what we know so far, it doesn’t sound like it, but they’re not telling us much.

We have an impressive cast list for the movie. We know that the Marvel Eternals film is being helmed by Chloé Zhao, who just won an Oscar for Nomadland. And we know that, as far as Marvel has promised, we’re planning on seeing this game-changing adventure on November 5, 2021.
