The Mandalorian is one of the best projects that Disney has released since taking over Star Wars, and now it’s headed to theaters. Variety revealed that Jon Favreau will be directing a new movie titled The Mandalorian & Grogu that is set to go into production this year. Favreau created The Mandalorian Disney+ series and has worked extensively with Disney in the MCU and various other projects like the live-action The Lion King.

The Mandalorian Season 4 Is Still In Production

The Mandalorian follows Pedro Pascal as the titular armored bounty hunter who takes a youngling named Grogu under his wing. The series finished its third season last year, and a fourth season is in production. It will be interesting to see if The Mandalorian & Grogu is a continuation of the story in the series or if it will dive into an unseen part of the story that has already passed.

Jon Favreay And Dave Filoni Will Oversee The Project

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be produced by Favreau alongside Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Dave Filoni has had a heavy hand in the Star Wars TV universe dating back to his days as the supervising director on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Along with executive producing The Mandalorian and creating Ahsoka Filoni has held various roles on other Star Wars projects such as Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, and more.

Filoni Also Directing The Skeleton Crew

The Mandalorian & Grogu isn’t the only Star Wars film in the works, as there were numerous films announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration. Dave Filoni will also be directing a film that brings together storylines from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and the upcoming Skeleton Crew. It seems this film will come after The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Rey’s Feature Film Also Releasing

Along with The Mandalorian & Grogu and the Dave Filoni film, we will also be seeing New Jedi Order, a movie that follows Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker as she rebuilds the Jedi Order after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Meanwhile, there is always a Lando film in the works, along with upcoming films from James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy, and Rian Johnson.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Will Be The Next Star Wars Film

Before any of those, we’ll be getting The Mandalorian & Grogu. The surprise announcement and the fact that the film moved to the top of the slate means we should be seeing it decently soon. The next Star Wars movie was set to come out in May 2026, so we’ll likely be seeing Jon Favreau’s film before then. However, we’ll just have to wait and see what the release date is.

Stream Star Wars On Disney+ While You Wait

Disney has been constantly shifting release dates for its big projects, so there’s no telling how soon we’ll be seeing The Mandalorian & Grogu. We’ve frequently seen major MCU blockbusters get shifted to new release dates, so the same could happen here. Hopefully, we’ll get to see it sooner than later.

In the meantime, you can catch up with the latest Star Wars projects on Disney+. Ahsoka and The Mandalorian are currently available to stream on the platform. You can also look forward to new shows like The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, along with new seasons of The Bad Batch and Tales of the Jedi in 2024.
