To some audiences, Kristen Stewart will always be Bella Swan, the stone-faced heroine of the Twilight series of films. However, since she emerged as the star of one of the most popular, most hated teen franchises of all time, she has swung wildly in a different direction, making her name in European art films like Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper and more recently with the Princess Diana biopic Spencer. Her new film Love Lies Bleeding just recruited a few more stars and here we present them:

Joining Kristen Stewart for Love Lies Bleeding: Katy O’Brian, Dave Franco, Jena Malone, and Academy Award-winner Ed Harris. While details of the upcoming A24 film are still thin, the central plot of the movie involves a lesbian romance set in the world of female bodybuilding. Katy O’Brian is best known for her work on the post-apocalyptic Syfy series Z Nation, as well as a recurring role on the CW superhero show Black Lightning. Prior to beginning her acting career, O’Brian was a police officer in Indiana and competed in bodybuilding contests; it is probably safe to assume she may be playing the love interest of Kristen Stewart. It is also know known what role Ed Harris will play, but you certainly do not cast a legendary and terrifying actor like Harris just to hang around and be chummy. Dave Franco, meanwhile, is coming off a praised run on the Apple TV+ mystery series The Afterparty, and Jena Malone is set to star in Zack Snyder’s upcoming science fiction film Rebel Moon.

The Kristen Stewart-starring Love Lies Bleeding will be directed by Rose Glass; this is her second feature after 2019’s Saint Maud, a psychological horror film exploring the intersection of Roman Catholicism, sexuality, and guilt. Glass co-wrote the script with Weronika Tofilska, who has herself directed a number of episodes of HBO’s His Dark Materials. The movie is being co-produced and distributed by A24, the American company noted for distributing indie darlings like Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, Robert Egger’s The Witch, and Ari Aster’s Midsommar. That track record probably indicates that things will not be all smooth and fun for Kristen Stewart in this particular movie.

After departing Hollywood for more rarefied, esoteric fare, Kristen Stewart quickly met with critical acclaim. For her work in Clouds of Sils Maria, she received the prestigious César Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first American actress in decades to even be nominated. She also received an Academy Award nomination for portraying Princess Diana in Spencer, though the number of people portraying the dead royal in recent years has made that particular role a competitive one.

Kristen Stewart has recently been returning to more mainstream roles, including the franchise non-starter Charlie’s Angels in 2019 along with Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska and the LGBTQ-themed holiday romantic comedy The Happiest Season with Mackenzie Davis. More recently, she starred in David Cronenberg’s long-gestating Crimes of the Future along with Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux.
