It could be because of Johnny Depp being in the public eye with his current defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, but the best performance that the man has given is currently in the top 10 on Disney+. What film is that? None other than the role that truly defined the man’s acting chops. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl has found a new awakening and people are watching the film in droves right now. This also could be because Depp also publicly stated that he would never return to the franchise, not even for $300 million dollars. The film might have exploded into people’s homes as the nostalgic feeling of seeing where the man truly made a name for himself.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl launched a franchise that was massively successful, despite the last two films not really being that great. The franchise made over $4.5 billion in worldwide box office numbers, and that was due to Johnny Depp catapulting his way into superstardom by portraying Captain Jack Sparrow. Despite what anyone says about the man now, this role was iconic for so many reasons. For the longest time, it felt as if Depp was really Captain Jack. The two were synonymous with one another. The original film truly paved the way for what was to be a Disney takeover. On a budget of $140 million, the first Pirates film raked in over $654 million. The film still holds an 80% critic rating and 86% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Johnny Depp was already a renowned actor when he was cast as Jack Sparrow, but the performance really made him a household name. In 2001, he held roles in Blow and From Hell, but he was quiet until Disney came knocking. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was released in 2003, and it arguably jump-started his career again. Again, not that he was in trouble, but Depp owned this role more than any other he had. The actor had long been attached to more macabre roles, but this franchise allowed him to carry in his swagger and charm in a role that perfectly matched him. Just look at his intro below:

Many wondered how Disney was going to even turn a popular theme park ride into a full-blown movie, but when Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl came out, those doubts were silenced immediately. The spirit of what it meant to be a pirate was truly embedded in Johnny Depp and his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. Bribing the port officer and then robbing him immediately after is just fantastic writing and acting. The embodiment of that role is what paved the way for Depp to truly be recognized as an actor that could truly do it all. Even though piracy is essentially about robbing and doing terrible things to people, Captain Jack Sparrow was a hero that everyone rooted for. That was inherent in the performance from Depp. He portrayed Jack Sparrow as one of the most liked anti-heroes in cinema history.

Johnny Depp being cast as Jack Sparrow is about as perfect as Chris Hemsworth was in becoming Thor, and the same with Chris Evans as Captain America. Sparrow become that cheeky pirate that everyone loved from the moment he came bumbling onto movie screens. This performance will go down as one of the most legendary in Disney history, and just in general cinema history. It’s that good.

As previously mentioned, Johnny Depp publicly stated that he would never return to the franchise. This likely has a lot to do with the fact that Disney didn’t back the man up when news about the domestic abuse allegations broke. To be honest, Depp was their golden boy, so it stands to reason he would be upset. Should Depp win this trial, maybe there could be some more talks between the actor and Disney to revive the Pirates reboot. As for now, go stream the original film which started one of the most successful franchises in history. See the movie that proves Depp is still regarded as one of the best actors of our generation, despite the legal issues that are currently surrounding the man.
