Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the few films released last year that had a remarkable box office, making $319 million worldwide before the pandemic shuttered theaters. Despite undergoing a massive character redesign and delays, Sonic the Hedgehog was still a success, and featured an ending that heavily hinted at future installments. Now, a new rumor is suggesting that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will feature Knuckles the Echidna, and will be voiced by Game of Thrones’ Jason Momoa.

This rumor comes from The Illuminerdi, who were also the ones to originate the rumor that Knuckles would be appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Neither of these rumors have been confirmed as of yet, so take this with a grain of salt. But in the original rumor, The Illuminerdi stated that the production was looking for an actor who could play serious, but also gullible. Based on the description from this supposed production listing, Jason Momoa sounds like he would be a great choice.

Sonic the Hedgehog ended with an appearance by Sonic’s video game partner, Tails, while Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik took on a look that seemed more similar to what he looked like in the games. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first film and is returning for the sequel, has said that a sequel would include more elements from the video games. It’s unclear who would be voicing Tails, although Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has voiced the character in the video games since 2014, voiced the character in the original film’s cameo. But with Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jason Momoa as Knuckles, this already would be a great voice cast.

Apparently, the production casting call for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also mentioned a character named Randall, who would interact with just the human characters and not the animated characters. According to The Illuminerdi, names like Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock were being discussed, although it’s unclear if the character would be supporting or more of a cameo. But with a sequel cast that already includes James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, and supposedly Jim Carrey returning, with the possible addition of Jason Momoa, this sequel could be looking to add even more big names.

Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is planned to take place between March and May of this year. There have been a few hints at what is to come, as Schwartz has said he’s excited to see a more game-like version of Robotnik in the sequel, and co-writer Pat Casey has said we could see Sonic going “Super Sonic,” which means the introduction of the Chaos Emeralds. Casey did say a sequel could include Knuckles, but it doesn’t sound as though that has been confirmed for the sequel, nor as Jason Momoa’s casting in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

With filming starting in the next month, and the sequel planned for a 2022 release, it seems as though we will be getting confirmation of the voice cast in the near future. If Sonic the Hedgehog 2 does include Knuckles the Echidna, Jason Momoa would certainly be an interesting choice alongside Ben Schwartz’s Sonic.
