The cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 includes Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Idris Elba.
Video game adaptations have come quite the rage these days, and movie studios are now starting to figure out how they can be successful in creating adaptations that bring fans in by the truckload.
One of the most entertaining and best adaptations released so far has been Sonic the Hedgehog with two movies released in its now-growing franchise. The success of the first movie was certainly echoed in the second, and that might be because of the fantastic cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The majority of the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was brought back in a way that did not feel hacky and certainly brought another level to this beloved budding movie series.
Also, who could be mad about Jim Carrey reprising one of his zanier roles? So, let’s take a look at the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and possibly those who might be returning for the third movie.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Cast
CAST OF SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 FEATURES BEN SCHWARTZ AND JAMES MARSDEN
Ben Schwartz – Sonic
Ben Schwartz has turned into one of the most beloved comedic actors, famously holding fan-favorite roles in Parks & Recreation, Duck Tales, and Bojack Horseman.
His unique ability to adapt to animation and appear as an overtly odd character in live-action led him to star as Sonic, and his return to the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the same role. He fit nicely into the fast-talking, charming, and quippy Sonic character, leaving fans to want to see both movies a few times over.
The cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 might have changed a bit, but Sonic is still the same fast furball as he was in the first movie. However, now he has more of a sense of wanting to protect those around him, including his beloved Green Hills home. However, Dr. Robtnik aka Eggman returns with one of the powerful emeralds and this time with an Echidna warrior named Knuckles.
Sonic might have been able to beat everyone before, including Eggman, but Knuckles’ misplaced rage makes it harder for Sonic to run circles around everyone in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Considering he is the star of the franchise, Sonic is 100% returning for the third movie.
Colleen O’Shaughnessey – Tails
Colleen O’Shaughnessey has portrayed the voice of Miles “Tails” Prower for years in the video game series, and fans were hugely delighted at her being added to the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Granted, she did voice the character when he appeared in the post-credits scene of the first movie, but she was added as the main voice for Tails going into the sequel.
Tails is a genius and the techie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cast. Tails uses gadgetry that helps him fly and fight, and when he learns of Sonic’s bravery against Dr. Robotnik, he is inspired to do more with his life.
He learns of Robotnik and Knuckles’ plan to hurt Sonic, so he travels to Earth to warn Sonic, and takes in inspiration from the Blue Blur directly. Tails is Sonic’s right-hand man, which means he will 100% be coming back for the third movie.
James Marsden – Tom Wachowski
James Marsden has been one of the more wonderful aspects of the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. His character in Tom Wachowski is heartwarming, seeing himself as the father figure of Sonic, though he needs to also let go of the idea that Sonic is a child. Tom is also trying to keep his career afloat while he deals with an extraterrestrial being that has just happened to appear at his house.
Depending on the schedule of James Marsden, we would bet that he is going to be joining the cast of Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Tom’s life is tied to Sonic, and there is plenty of the parent/kid dynamic to explore.
Tika Sumpter – Maddie Wachowski
Tika Sumpter portrays Maddie Wachowski in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and she is the overtly supportive wife of Tom. Maddie and Tom’s relationship is often stressed by the hijinks that Sonic gets into, and it also serves as the usual B story for the movies.
Maddie only wants to see Tom go after his dreams, but when she needs to step up to save the day, she does so in grand style.
Maddie and Tom go together, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 proved she can be an asset in the cast, instead of just playing the wife part of Tom’s wife. If James Marsden returns, then Tika Sumpter is certainly coming along too.
Adam Pally – Wade Whipple
Adam Pally serves as the goofy comedic relief of the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, though the movie doesn’t necessarily need more of that. However, Pally portrays Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple of Green Hills.
Whipple is often the oaf-type character, but one that also does what is best for his community, while backing up his boss and best friend: Tom.
Adam Pally is fantastic, and he would hope that he would be welcomed back to the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A small cameo would suffice too, but we are not sure if he is necessary to the plot going forward.
Natasha Rothwell – Rachel
Natasha Rothwell is arguably one of the better characters from the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, portraying Maddie’s best friend, Rachel. Rachel does not trust Tom at all, and likely holds some sort of vendetta against him for stealing away her best friend.
However, Rachel’s personal life is front and center of the sequel seeing as how the man she is marrying is an undercover agent for G.U.N. (Guardian Units of Nations), an organization that wants to capture Sonic and Tails to do tests on them.
One of the better parts of this movie is when Rachel goes full Bridezilla after she discovers her wedding has been nothing but a sham, so she helps Maddie save Tom, Sonic, and Tails in a fantastic sequence that brings together the best characters from the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
We would hope that Natasha Rothwell is asked to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, though it would be a 50/50 choice at this point.
Donna Jay Fulks – Longclaw
There are few better in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 than Donna Jay Fulks returning as Longclaw, Sonic’s adopted mother. Longclaw is only shown in the movie briefly, as she returns as a projection brought on from the map she has gifted to Sonic, and in a small flashback sequence at the beginning of the movie.
The former moment is quite heartwarming and gives Sonic more urgency in finding the Master Emerald and protecting it.
The last secret of Longclaw was revealed during Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so it would not make sense for her to return in the third movie. However, she could play an integral part in the Knuckles series, as the Echidnas were the ones that hunted her down.
THE VILLAINS ARE LED BY JIM CARREY AND IDRIS ELBA
Jim Carrey – Dr. Robotnik aka Eggman
Jim Carrey fit into the role of the crazed super scientist quite well, and it was great to see him return to the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik. The last time that we saw Robotnik, Sonic had banished him to the Mushroom planet with one of his magical rings. Now, he is back and better than ever.
Well, that’s to say that he has incorporated the help of Knuckles, a warrior who is also seeking the Master Emerald. Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles form the team that takes on Sonic and Tails in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
However, Robotnik naturally betrays everyone and only wants to use the Master Emerald for his own selfish means of destroying Sonic. Jim Carrey was naturally a very welcomed addition to the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but has since claimed he no longer wishes to act.
This is sad news considering how well he has done in the role of Robotnik, and even more sad considering the franchise is going to continue without him. Jim Carrey won’t return for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 unless the script is something that completely impresses him, or so he says.
Idris Elba – Knuckles
Idris Elba plays the part of Knuckles in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and is a welcomed edition. The character is a bit of the same type of humor and nonsensical speech as Drax from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Knuckles is quite serious, battling Sonic to retrieve the Master Emerald for himself believing it is his cultural birthright to possess it.
Naturally, he is double-crossed by Dr. Robotnik, helping the man escape from the Mushroom Planet, only to see Robotnik take the Master Emerald for himself and leave Knuckles for dead. Thankfully, Knuckles’ heart grows three sizes when Sonic saves his life, which could move the character to the “good guy” side of things by the end of the movie.
Idris Elba was so good in the role of Knuckles, that he is going to move past appearing in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and be given his own series. We are not sure when that series is going to happen, but we are going to learn a great deal more about Knuckles and his race of Echidnas warriors. Knuckles will certainly be back for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 along with a prequel (we think) series.
Lee Majdoub – Agent Stone
Lee Majdoub portrays Agent Stone, a character who was carried over from the original movie and is now back as Dr. Robotnik’s assistant in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, Stone has more nefarious goals of his own, and he also wishes to double-cross Robotnik and take control of his own life.
An interesting dynamic could be that Agent Stone comes back and takes over as the new Dr. Robotnik. With Jim Carrey’s Robotnik out of the way, Stone could take sole ownership of the gadgetry he knows how to use anyway. We would bet on him returning as the main villain for the third movie.
Tom Butler – Commander Walters
Though the argument could be made that Tom Butler’s Commander Walters is not a bad guy per se, he is certainly someone that tows that line from the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Walters is now the leader of G.U.N., which is an organization that is attempting to kidnap Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, to want to use their powers for military purposes.
G.U.N. now knows about the power of the Master Emerald and Sonic, so we would expect that Commander Walters and his “do the right thing” organization is going to be firmly placed in the third movie.
Shemar Moore – Randall Handel
We could also place Shemar Moore in the “good guy” column for the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but let’s face it, the man did some messed up things in the movie.
He faked an entire marriage and relationship with Rachel, just so he could get in close enough to find out if Tom was harboring Sonic. He does have a bit of a change of heart, though it is misplaced after agreeing to go along with this whole charade of tricking Rachel.
Shemar Moore may have been integral in building out the character of Rachel, but we would not bet that he is asked to return to the third movie. He might be mentioned by Rachel, but he is also not the commander of G.U.N., so his presence isn’t exactly needed for the upcoming sequel.
