Jason Momoa’s movie history is a party mix. Sometimes you’re going to pull something out and have the best experience of your life. Sometimes you’re going to wonder what just happened and why you did that to yourself. It’s not always going to be easy to tell which is which. For Netflix users, the recently added 2018 thriller, Braven, was an action movie surprise they hadn’t counted on. Maybe the movie didn’t mean to be funny, and maybe no one expected to be touched by Jason Momoa saving his family, but when it quickly rose to the top five daily movies on Netflix, it turned out fans thought it was a great time.
You may be wondering why you haven’t heard of Braven before, especially if you’re a Jason Momoa fan. Braven is a B-movie thriller. While a lot of us may put those movies on when nothing else is on, there aren’t a lot of folks seeking these stories out. There are some hints of what you might like about the movie in the trailer, but only if you know what to look for before you watch it. For example, Jason Momoa… being Jason Momoa.
The trailer for the movie shows it’s kind of a cheesy but serious action thriller story. Jason Momoa is going to be a good dad fighting against bad guys in snow-covered mountains. The short description for the movie reads, “A logger defends his family from a group of dangerous drug runners.” It doesn’t attempt to make it sound like there is anything remarkable or surprising here. But, over the years, Jason Momoa has earned some love from fans. There are enough people who will watch a new Momoa film just because he’s in it, especially if it’s just right there on Netflix. When enough of those folks put Braven on, they were surprised to find moments that were unintentionally hilarious. It was time to hit social media and make everyone they knew watch it. Or at least everyone who could appreciate Jason Momoa using a flaming tomahawk to kill someone.
This is a fun action movie, often funny, but not one full of great one-liners. These moments may be a bit funnier if you’re a fan of Jason Momoa, who gets asked to throw axes every time he appears on a talk show. Bonus points if you get him drinking beer while he does it. There’s a certain hilarity to the brand around the actor throwing axes and shooting crossbows. Discovering a 2018 movie where he does both was bound to get fans recommending the movie on social media.
Of course, everyone finds something different in the movies they like, right? For some, it was the unexpected humor.
Others found a lot to love.
For some people, Jason Momoa was enough.
For some it was just the simplicity of the story.
If you’re ready to see what got Netflix users excited, Braven is available to stream now.
