By Charlene Badasie | Updated

Jamie Lee Curtis wants to join the Straw Hat Pirates in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece. “Once the strike against the greed of the AMPTP is settled with a fair contract, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha,” the Academy Award-winning actress wrote on Instagram. Series showrunner Matt Owens then expressed his eagerness for the actress to join the project.

“Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby,” Owens wrote in the comments of Curtis’ post. “Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let’s talk!” Given the evident enthusiasm from all parties involved, fans have a promising opportunity to witness their dream cast come to fruition after their extensive social media campaign.

However, it’s important to note that nothing is confirmed. Various factors, such as scheduling conflicts or other unforeseen challenges, could hinder the casting process. Netflix recently announced the renewal of One Piece for a second season. According to the producers of the live-action series, scripts for the upcoming season are complete, and new episodes could be ready within a year.

Who Is Doctor Kureha?

Doctor Kureha is a popular character from the manga created by Eiichiro Oda. She first appears in the Drum Island Arc, which is part of the larger One Piece storyline. Kureha is an elderly woman with distinctive long, wild hair. She is a highly skilled doctor with a sharp tongue and a no-nonsense attitude, known for her eccentric, outspoken personality.

Despite her age, she is quite agile and physically capable, often performing acrobatic feats. Doctor Kureha plays a significant role during the One Piece Drum Island Arc, where she is the only doctor. Known as the witch of the Kureha, she initially refuses to treat the Straw Hat Pirates’ crew member, Nami, who is severely ill, but eventually agrees.

She eventually becomes an essential ally to the crew and helps them during their time on Drum Island. Doctor Kureha is also a longtime friend and mentor to Doctor Hiriluk, another prominent One Piece character. She taught him about medicine and was deeply affected by his eccentric personality and dream of making people laugh.

After Hiriluk’s death, she continued his legacy by trying to bring laughter and happiness to the people of Drum Island. Doctor Kureha adds a unique and quirky element to the One Piece world and her interactions with the Straw Hat Pirates, and despite her gruff exterior, she has a caring side and plays a crucial role in the crew’s adventures.
