Henry Cavill has gone from sending his opponents flying miles away with a single punch to close-quarters ass-kicking without breaking eye contact. A new image of Henry Cavill as the spy Argylle from the movie of the same name shows that the previously high-flying action star is just as comfortable throwing down in a confined space as he is with the whole outdoors at his disposal. Not only does this version of Henry Cavill not take to the skies to fight like Superman, but he doesn’t even get up from his seat.

Henry Cavill Makes Fighting Look Effortless

The picture comes from Argylle‘s first big action setpiece—a long flight aboard a cramped train. While the single image doesn’t indicate how much explosive action director Matthew Vaughn packed into his new spy-thriller/comedy, it certainly sends a message. Don’t f— with Henry Cavill’s Argylle…or really just Henry Cavill.Have you seen the size of the dude’s biceps?

Ellu Conway’s Story Comes To Life In Argylle

Argylle follows Bryce Dallas Howard as author Elly Conway. Conway is writing a spy novel featuring a main character named Agent Argylle that starts inexplicably coming true. While riding aboard the train in the image, Coneway is approached by real-life spy Aiden, who then has to fight to protect Elly from rival spies aboard the claustrophobic train. During the inaugural fight scene, Sam Rockwell (Aiden) is replaced with Henry Cavill’s fictional Argylle as the film keeps cutting between the two actors.

Matthew Vaughn’s Vision

Mathew Vaughn was inspired to make an adventure comedy during the Covid-19 pandemic. Confined to his home, Vaughn watched classic action-adventure films like Romancing the Stone with his daughters. The experience convinced him to make a breezy, fun action movie that’s all about escapism.Vaughn describes Argylle as more “spy” than an adventure movie that nevertheless maintains the spirit of a swashbuckling adventure like Romancing the Stone. In keeping with the film’s lighthearted tone, Vaughn decided to dress Henry Cavill as Argylle in a green velvet suit with a flattop haircut—an unusual look for a spy, but one the director insisted on. Cavill admitted in a recent interview that the look was absolutely, 100 percent Matthew Vaughn’s idea.Henry Cavill only accepted his Argylle look once Vaughn asked the actor to trust him. Cavill has since admitted that the look was what he was “looking for” for the character and that he’s glad he listened to Vaughn.

Sam Rockwell As Aiden Wilde

Meanwhile, Sam Rockwell as Aiden Wilde got to sport a more shaggy look, complete with long, scraggly hair akin to the do Henry Cavill sported during his time on The Witcher, along with an equally scraggly beard. The juxtaposition between the well-dressed but conspicuous Argylle and unkempt Aiden, who could blend easily into a crowd, is Vaughn’s way of showing the difference between Conway’s fantasy world and the movie’s version of real-life espionage.
