The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

There’s an art form to make an enticing movie trailer that explains the film but leaves the audience wanting more, and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare manages to walk that tightrope. It helps when the film stars Henry Cavill and reunites him with director Guy Ritchie. The film, which has been anticipated for years, brings the modern team-up action film back to World War 2, and the result looks amazing.

The most amazing part about Henry Cavill’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is that it is based on a true story.

The trailer for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare starts with Cary Elwes as Winston Churchill, convincing Henry Cavill’s former Army Officer Gus March-Phillips to undertake a dangerous mission behind German lines. Soon, the most unbelievable part of the trailer takes place, and it’s not the “very bad” team being quickly introduced. It’s the big, bold letters that say “based on a true story.”

Amazingly, it is based on the true story of the Special Operations Executive, a group so secretive that the members were referred to as “Churchill’s Secret Army.” Gus March-Phillips was a member of this group, and he led expeditions into Axis territory. The Henry Cavill movie is based on Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperados of WWII by Damien Lewis.

Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie last worked together on The Man From U.N.C.L.E., an underrated spy caper that has been reevaluated since it flopped in theaters.

Joining Henry Cavill on the mission is a who’s who of rising stars, including Reacher’s Alan Ritchson, Crazy, Rich Asians Henry Golding, and Ambulance’s Eiza Gonzalez. Judging by the trailer, each star will have plenty of time to shine, as it’s clear not everything is going to go according to plan. Hopefully, the best scenes in the film aren’t all revealed in the trailer.

We do have to credit the brief footage for one important thing: it features a real rock song and not a slowed-down epic cover version, which is one of those trends we loved when it started, but it’s been a decade; let’s move on. Instead, Henry Cavill is seen shooting Nazis to the soothing sounds of Queen. Filling World War 2 with anachronistic rock music would be a very Guy Ritchie thing to do, but like his millions of fans, we’re here for it.

Henry Cavill can soon be seen in theaters starring in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle.

Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie last worked together on The Man From U.N.C.L.E., an underrated spy caper that has been reevaluated since it flopped in theaters. Since then, Cavill is no longer Superman, and Ritchie has produced a few movies with mixed results, as The Gentlemen was a lot of fun, but the world did not need Operation Fortune. The two see to enjoy working together, and we can only hope this is the start of another great pairing.

Fans can next catch Henry Cavill in Argylle, the latest film from Matthew Vaughn, starring as a secret agent alongside Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
