Fans waiting for the next chapter of HBO’s True Detective are going to have to wait a bit longer than expected. According to Deadline the upcoming True Detective: Night Country was initially part of Max’s 2023 sizzle reel—a trailer that highlights all of the new products coming out—but is now confirmed to be coming out sometime in January of 2024.

While the specifics on why HBO is choosing to postpone True Detective have yet to be released, most of the studios currently postponing projects that were set to come out this year are doing so because of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

True Detective: Night Country now won’t be coming out until sometime in January of 2024.

The newest season of HBO’s True Detective gets its subtitle Night Country, from its setting, Ennis, Alaska, where the sun hardly ever shines. The new season is said to follow a new pair of detectives, Liz Danvers, played by Jodi Foster, and Evangeline Navarro, played by Kali Reis, as they investigate the disappearance of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis.

As per usual, when it comes to True Detective, the investigation will force the two detectives to face some dark truths from both their past and the town of Ennis as a whole.

Night Country boasts an all-star cast that, in addition to Foster and Reis, includes former Doctor Who stars Christopher Eccleston and Fiona Shaw of the infamous live-action Super Mario Bros. film from 1993. Shaw may have also been the evil aunt in movie about magicians called Harry Something-Or-Other and the Fill In the Blank but no one really remembers those.

HBO is far from the only studio to delay the release of some of their hotly anticipated upcoming projects. Warner Bros. Discovery recently pushed back the release of Dune: Part II from November of this year to March of 2024 as well as the latest chapter of Legendary pictures Monsterverse, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire which is now expected to debut in theaters on April 12, 2024.

Meanwhile, Sony chose to move their sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife from December to March 29, of 2024—potentially pitting it against Dune: Part II in a March blockbuster showdown.

True Detective: Night Country‘s delay became evident when the series’ website was updated to list the show as premiering next year. HBO itself quickly confirmed that the series would now be coming out in January of next year, lest fans speculate if maybe the website was wrong.

The wait between season 3 of True Detective and next year’s season 4 will be the longest wait between seasons in the show’s history so far. True Detective’s first season debuted in 2014, with season 2 following the next year and season 3 coming just two years after that in 2017.

If Night Country‘s premiere date doesn’t change again, it will have been over six years since the release of True Detective season 3. That’s quite a while in television time, and HBO will just have to hope that True Detective fans haven’t moved on in the interim.
