Sonic the Hedgehog has been a popular character with gamers for around thirty years. Despite his longevity, it was still a surprise when the Jim Carrey movie pulled in $319 million at the box office in 2020. Since that time, the franchise has had a few developments, and now, the studio is ready to make one more. A trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot has shared that a Sonic live-action series is in development. The series is being made for streaming on Paramount+.

Giant Freakin Robot’s source shared that the new Sonic live-action series for Paramount+ is not the same as the animated series previously announced for Netflix. This is definitely a new project in the works. Our source was unable to confirm whether anyone from the Jim Carrey films will be involved. In 2021, the cast and crew worked on the sequel film, set to be released in 2022. This means that the people behind the live-action movies are still working on Sonic, but it’s hard to say whether they’ll be connected to the new series. Judging by the film’s popularity, it would seem like that’s what fans most want to see happen.

Getting the people behind the movie involved in the Sonic live-action series would be huge news for fans. It would also give the new series an established cinematic world to play in, giving audiences a better idea of what to expect. It’s hard to say whether ViacomCBS, the company that owns Paramount+, is interested in making that kind of investment in their streaming platform. Paramount+ is still a fairly small streaming service. Paramount is still big in the content licensing game, which is why shows like South Park are on HBO Max and their biggest offering, Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone, is on Peacock and the Paramount Network, but not streaming on Paramount+. Investing in the Sonic live-action series is a step in the right direction to help grow their offerings, especially if they can get actors like Jim Carrey on board.

The Sonic live-action series will be the perfect opportunity to expand the cast, including introducing more of Sonic’s classic villains. Sonic the Hedgehog has been seen in many iterations over the years, including comic books. This means there are a lot of established characters the new show could introduce to build out a more interesting series. Will the series introduce Scourge the Hedgehog? In the comics, he’s sometimes known as Anti-Sonic or Evil Sonic. Characters like Grounder (a character created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik) could also be a good fit for a new series. Idris Elba is introducing Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It would be interesting if the movie star decided to voice his character for the new live-action series as well.

Of course, the biggest win from the live-action movies for the new series would be Jim Carrey’s Dr. Ivo Robotnik. The character has reminded audiences of what’s so great about Jim Carrey. Dr. Ivo Robotnik is over the top with his villainous ways. He sports the wide mustache of the classic villain, takes advantage of Jim Carrey’s gifts with physical comedy, and is a big part of what helped make the first movie the unexpected success that it was. Proving that audiences enjoyed it, the video game adaptation sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Jim Carrey isn’t a guarantee, it’s certainly something fans would like to see in a Sonic live-action series. If that doesn’t happen, hopefully, they can get the animators who created Sonic for the live-action movies on board and keep the same look for the main character. It’ll be interesting to see how they move forward with this one.
