Mortal Kombat 2 seems like a no-brainer after the seeming success of the new film (read our review here). The next film will supposedly deliver the titular tournament instead of side-stepping it like the 2021 film decided to do. But, just what will fan expect from the sequel when it comes to the tournament? After the first film, will fans want things to ramp up in terms of the intensity and ridiculousness that the series is known for? We reached out to one of our trusted and proven insider sources to try and gain some new information on the sequel. The report they came back with has us genuinely surprised.

According to our source, Warner Bros. is wanting to take Mortal Kombat 2 into space for the tournament. Just what the impetus behind this desire is remains a mystery, but apparently that is the direction the studio is currently looking at for the sequel. The franchise is not exactly known for taking trips into outer space, but going to that location would certain differentiate the follow-up movie from the original. Just what kind of shenanigans would be attached to a martial arts tournament in outer space is beyond us at this point. Maybe that kind of kooky originality is part of the reason why Warner Bros. is interested in taking this unique angle with Mortal Kombat 2. They want to go full Leprechaun 4 and Jason X as soon as possible. As fans of those horror entries, we approve.

We should point out that this information about Mortal Kombat 2 is still very fresh and could easily be one of many ideas being floated by the studio. We have also heard that the studio is looking at an all-female entry in the franchise as well. There is also the possibility that the series could cross over with another major Warner Bros. intellectual property: the DC universe. So it sounds like there are a lot of pitches being tossed around the offices of Warner Bros. when it comes to Mortal Kombat 2 and the overall future of the franchise.

Sub-Zero Mortal Kombat Joe taslim

The outer space angle isn’t the only update on Mortal Kombat 2 that our source provided us with. In addition to more familiar characters from the games making their way into the sequel, our source also says that the character Sub-Zero will be playing a major role in the story moving forward. That makes sense considering how the character was used in the first film. It is almost a guarantee that the plan is to turn the character into fan-favorite Noob Saibot, but it looks like we could also get another version of Sub-Zero and this would be a heroic iteration of the character. This would align with the mythology of the game where the moniker of Sub-Zero was passed on to another member of the Lin Kuei clan.

It certainly sounds like Mortal Kombat 2 is determined to up the ante when it finally enters production. Heading to space for the tournament would undoubtedly cause some serious discussion from fans of the property. We will have to wait and see if that is the final direction Warner Bros. decides to take with the sequel.
