Emily Blunt Speaks Edge Of Tomorrow 2 And We’re On Pins And Needles

Emily Blunt has been in a ton of great movies recently, but fans are still waiting to find out when she might return for a sequel to the 2014 sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow. Well, she has given an update on Edge of Tomorrow 2 during an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, and it’s not exactly amazing news. During the podcast, Blunt revealed, “Doug and I talk all the time about it, adding, “I know Tom wants to do it, hopefully, at some point.”

Everyone’s On Board For The Sequel

Emily Blunt is referring to director Doug Liman and her Edge of Tomorrow co-star Tom Cruise, who are both apparently willing to return for Edge of Tomorrow 2. That’s the good news, but the bad news is that Blunt is wary about how long it’s been since the last film. During her appearance, she said, “But it’s timing, but it’s also been ten years since we made it … There was an amazing script in the works, but I think it would only have worked if we shot it eight years ago.”

Busy Schedules Mean Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Is Likely Very Far Off

While it seems like Emily Blunt and the rest of the crew would be on board for Edge of Tomorrow 2, the forward progress on the film has been so slow that she’s not even sure if and when we might see the film. It’s definitely great to hear that Blunt, Liman, and Cruise would all come back to the project, but it seems like there might be some feet dragging on the studio side of things. Of course, it doesn’t help that Blunt, Liman, and Cruise are all incredibly busy.

Emily Blunt In Oppenheimer

Emily Blunt recently starred in one of the biggest films of the year in Oppenheimer where she gave one of her best performances as the long-suffering Kitty Oppenheimer. She also starred in the film Pain Hustlers and will kick off 2024, co-starring with Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise and Doug Liman are working on a new film together where they’ll literally go to space for filming, so it’s not surprising that all three parties haven’t been available for Edge of Tomorrow 2.

Tom Cruise In Dead Reckoning Part Two

Tom Cruise also has his upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which may or may not be his final turn as the superspy Ethan Hunt. Maybe if Cruise gets one of his major franchises off his plate, he might have more time to team up with Emily Blunt and Doug Liman for Edge of Tomorrow 2. There’s little doubt that fans of the first film would turn up in droves to check it out.

Edge of Tomorrow Is An Adapation Of All You Need Is Kill

The first Edge of Tomorrow was based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s light novel All You Need is Kill and was about a futuristic war between humanity and an alien race. The film follows Tom Cruise’s Major Cage, who gets trapped in a time loop and finds himself reliving the same day over and over. Meanwhile, he connects with Emily Blunt’s Sgt. Vrataski who helps train him for his battles to find the solution to winning the war.

The Edge Of Tomorrow Sequel Was First Announced In 2019

While the box office for the original film wasn’t the best turnout, the film earned critical acclaim and found a second life after its release. There is definitely interest in a sequel, which is why Warner Bros announced one in 2019 with the working title Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Emily Blunt, Doug Liman, and Tom Cruise were all confirmed to return, with Matthew Robinson handling script rewrites, but there have been very few updates on Edge of Tomorrow 2 since then.
