Dune: Prophecy Reveals Trailer Five Years After Announcement

The 2021 remake of Dune was a massive success for Warner Bros., who, in anticipation of its success, ordered a Dune prequel series through its subsidiary streamer, Max (formerly HBO Max). The order came five years ago, and the movie became a bonafide blockbuster that further cemented WB’s resolve about the series. Fast-forward to today, WB finally dropped a first look at the upcoming Dune: Prophecy.

The upcoming Dune: Prophecy series is scheduled to finally be released this fall…

Dune: Prophecy is an upcoming series produced for Max, and it’s based on the Sisterhood of Dune novel written by Brian Herbert—Frank Herbert’s eldest son—and Kevin J. Anderson. The story is set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and follows the two Harkonnen sisters as they deal with the forces that threaten the future of mankind through cloak-and-dagger and political tactics, establishing the fabled sect that would later become known as the Bene Gesserit.

The upcoming Dune: Prophecy series is scheduled to finally be released this fall after suffering through several major casting changes, as well as changes in directing, as the cinematic industry navigated the pandemic and the subsequent industry strikes. The series is currently in post-production, with credits mentioning Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, and many others.

The Bene Gesserit seeks to guide humanity’s future through careful breeding programs and manipulations, as seen in the movies and the upcoming Dune: Prophecy.

As previously mentioned, Dune: Prophecy is based on the book written by Frank Herbert’s eldest son. Herbert originally wrote six Dune novels as the mainline installments in the literary franchise, but Brian Herbert and co-author Kevin J. Anderson wrote more than 15 additional novels that have expanded the Dune universe significantly, including the Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, thus completing Frank Herbert’s original series—the two were written based on Frank Herbert’s original notes.

Sisterhood of Dune, upon which Dune: Prophecy is based, is the first novel in the Great Schools of Dune trilogy that serves as a prequel to the original novel series. Sisterhood of Dune was published in 2012 and details the creation and development of the Bene Gesserit, a sisterhood of women who undergo intense physical and mental training to gain extraordinary abilities, including deep-seated political influence and the ability to control their bodies down to the molecular level.

The Bene Gesserit seeks to guide humanity’s future through careful breeding programs and manipulations, as seen in the movies and the upcoming Dune: Prophecy. The subsequent two novels in the trilogy also depict the creation and development of mentats and navigators, with mentats being human computers trained to perform complex calculations and navigators able to foresee safe paths through space for faster-than-light travel. Oddly reminiscent of the Warhammer 40k universe Henry Cavill is currently adapting—it was heavily influenced by Dune.

With everything said, Dune: Prophecy will provide an intriguing look into the origins of some of the most influential organizations in the Dune franchise and further explore why they’re so influential in the movies. However, we’ll have to wait until fall to learn more.
