Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence just dropped an update on the development of Constantine 2, a sequel to the 2005 superhero horror film starring John Wick‘s Keanu Reeves. The news is good, according to Deadline, as Lawrence revealed additional details about the movie, its rating, and what the audiences can expect from the highly-anticipated sequel to one of the best superhero movies ever.

Now, before the discussion takes us further, allow us to say the following: yes, Keanu Reeves is coming back to Constantine 2 as the eponymous character. Francis Lawrence stated that the work on the movie’s development was previously halted by the Writers Guild of America strike, which has finally been resolved, and all the writers are now back to their designated positions. This means that the work on the movie resumes and that 2005’s Constantine is finally getting a long-awaited sequel.

The Sequel Film Will Be Even Darker Than The Original

The upcoming Constantine 2 will be an R-rated movie taking a similar approach to storytelling as the original did. This time around, however, the studio apparently won’t be imposing the same rules that Lawrence said hurt the original Constantine.

As for Keanu Reeve’s involvement, the actor will return as an older John Konstantine. In truth, Reeves was trying to get Constantine 2 off the ground for years, with no success whatsoever, until the sequel was finally revealed last year, much to the fandom’s content.

Following the announcement of Constantine 2, Lawrence explained just how difficult it is to get the sequels off the ground, particularly due to the character’s rights being unclear between DC and Vertigo. Additionally, things seem to be even less clear with DC transitioning to their new universe and superheroes being fired left and right. It’s crystal clear, however, that Constantine 2 won’t be a part of the new DC Universe, which is centered on Justice League from the comics. And there are also comments from James Gunn on the whole deal.

Keanu Reeves previously confirmed discussing Constantine 2 with Gunn, who stated that the bar for Elseworld Tales, which includes Constantine, will have a higher quality bar compared to anything produced by the DC alone. That shouldn’t be an issue.

However, meeting and surpassing the high bar set by Gunn shouldn’t be too difficult, considering the fact that Keanu Reeves, Francis Lawrence, and Akiva Goldsman—the producer of the original Constantine—are all working on the sequel film. Goldsman revealed that the story for the upcoming Constantine 2 has already been established between the three of them, but the writing was hindered by the recently concluded WGA strike.

Considered a cult classic by fans, the first Constantine film premiered in 2005 to middling reviews but was a moderate financial success. The movie starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBeouf, Djimon Hounsou, Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, and Gavin Rossdale alongside Reeves, who played a dark-haired American version of the typically blonde British comic book character.
