Although his final project for DC Studios, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, may be floundering at the box office, James Wan already has his eyes set on his next production. No stranger to the horror and thriller genres, the filmmaker’s next project will be an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic novel, Call Of Cthulhu. While not much is known plot-wise, audiences can expect Wan to stick closely to the book’s story as he refers to the opportunity as a “dream project.”

Wan says that he’s been working on the film for five years with his vision for The Call of Cthulhu finally gaining traction. What’s even more exciting for fans who can’t wait to come face to face with the beast is that the title will be one of several other titles from names like Sam Raimi and Jon M. Chu, that will also be receiving video game adaptations. The Stars-Hana lineup of game adaptations is set to include The Garfield Movie, Every House is Haunted, Hunting Season, and more.

As for The Call of Cthulhu, specifics surrounding when audiences can expect to dive into Wan’s latest project haven’t been released but we’re thrilled to know that the director is already eyeing his step back into the horror world. The news should come as no surprise as he recently made comments alluding to his desire to get back to the genre that he knows best. While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may have taken up the last few years of his life, Wan’s commitment to bringing fans some of the most terrifying on-screen productions is completely unmatched.

Wan made his directorial debut with Saw, kicking off his first franchise with others like The Conjuring Universe and the Insidious series to soon follow. While he hasn’t helmed each project in these collections, Wan has always served the films in one way or another, typically as a producer. The Call of Cthulhu will mark his first foray back into horror directing since 2021’s Malignant.

The director is also known for dipping into the Fast & Furious franchise, having lent his creative vision to Fast 7. Of his production credits outside of his created universes, Wan has produced titles such as M3GAN, Mortal Kombat and its upcoming sequel, and is also attached to the soon-to-be-released Night Swim and Salem’s Lot. As of right now, it’s unclear if Wan will also serve as a producer for The Call of Cthulhu or will just join as its director.

In H.P. Lovecraft’s 1928 short story, The Call of Cthulhu, a man named Francis Thurston is intrigued and haunted by a cult that bows to a cosmic octopus-like monster known as Cthulhu. Mystery awaits Thurston around every twist and turn as he tries to get to the bottom of the myth and separate fact from fiction.

James Wan’s involvement in The Call of Cthulhu should excite all fans of Lovecraft’s work as he will undoubtedly make the story as dark and intriguing as possible, as well as mold the monster to be a larger-than-life entity.
