We recently reported that both Dwayne Johnson and Rachel Weisz were in talks to appear in the new reboot of The Mummy. Also, the new reboot is going to be helmed by the two Batgirl directors: Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi. However, Deadline asked Brendan Fraser if he would return to The Mummy franchise, to which he replied, “Gosh, I don’t know any juicy details about it, but it’s kind of an open-ended question for some time now—I’m not opposed to it.”

To be fair, Brendan Fraser could be playing coy and not wanting to reveal if Universal has approached him about returning to The Mummy franchise that launched him into superstardom. Fraser is coming off a magnificent performance in The Whale, which is already being mentioned in the Academy Award conversations, which Fraser joked about more in the interview.

Brendan Fraser added, “I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life, so sign me up.” He might be alluding to the fact that everyone is currently talking about the actor and his big return to Hollywood blockbusters. Granted, The Whale might be more of an indie picture in that regard, but it is still fantastic and has kept everyone talking about the leading man.

He had to transform himself into a 600-pound man for The Whale, which was accomplished by using a fat suit and other movie magic. He recently stated he would be up for another “transformative role” which could mean that Brendan Fraser could get back into great shape like when he portrayed Rick O’Connell in The Mummy franchise. It would be great to see the franchise start again, as it had the same level of fame and following that the Indiana Jones franchise had.

For now, we are all going to have to wait and see if Brendan Fraser is going to return to The Mummy and wait for confirmation of our breaking news that both Johnson and Weisz are returning as well. It would make sense for The Mummy franchise to come back, as Hollywood is chock full of reboots and remakes anyway. Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi also already worked with Brendan Fraser on Batgirl, so it would also make sense for them to want to bring back the original star of the franchise.

Universal did try and reboot The Mummy with Tom Cruise in the lead role, but it crashed and burned. Even Brendan Fraser explained why the iteration of The Mummy did not work, and it was because the movie lacked, “fun.” Universal had this idea in their head to create this new Monster Universe but make each movie a bit darker and macabre. That clearly did not work, resulting in the Dark Universe being shut down before it truly got started.

We would love to see Brendan Fraser be brought back for The Mummy, so he can bring back this missing fun to a franchise that was full of adventure and mummified threats. Even if Dwayne Johnson was brought back as the Scorpion King, the CGI would at least be improved enough to make people want to see him return. We hope to hear confirmation of this news about The Mummy franchise soon, and we will certainly be the first ones to let everyone know if it truly happens.
