Black Panther 3 is already in development at Marvel Studios. The news was revealed by Letitia Wright at the Golden Globes Digital Pre-Show. When asked about the future of the franchise, the Wakanda Forever star said, “I think it’s already in the works.” However, she also noted that it might be a while before the film hits theaters.

“We just had a terrific two years of bringing it [Black Panther: Wakanda Forever] out and everybody coming together to support it,” Wright told Variety. “We need a little bit of a break.” The 29-year-old also said the film’s writer and director Ryan Coogler needs to work on a new story for Black Panther 3. “It’s going to take a while, but really excited for you guys to see that,” she continued.

It comes as no surprise that Marvel is working on Black Panther 3. Much like the 2018 film, Wakanda Forever was a massive success, grossing over $831 million at the global box office. The movie also featured prominently at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, with nominations for Best Original Song and a Best Supporting Actress win for Angela Bassett.

Additionally, a third Black Panther movie was previously mentioned by Ryan Coogler and Kevin Feige. Although the director seemed hesitant to confirm a third installment, the Marvel boss told Variety there had been conversations about Black Panther 3 with several pitched ideas. But when asked if he would make one without Coogler, he said it wouldn’t be his preference.

When production on Black Panther 3 eventually begins, Letitia Wright will likely continue her role as Wakanda’s new protector. Although she was nervous about taking up the mantle from Chadwick Boseman, the actress told People she did her best to honor his memory. “I always had moments of doubt on set,” she explained. However, she felt like Boseman was always rooting for her.

“I could just hear him [Boseman] be like, ‘Sister, you’re great. You got this. I’m proud of you,’” Leight continued. “That really just kept me moving forward.” Chadwick Boseman lost his battle with colon cancer in August 2020, before the latest installment of the franchise was filmed. His death was included in Wakanda Forever, as King T’Challa succumbed to an unknown illness.

Since it will be a while before Black Panther 3 is released, fans can still enjoy the current release. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sees the leaders of the region fight to protect it from invading forces. It features a stellar cast that includes Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Dominique Thorne, Danny Sapanim, Michaela Coel, and Mabel Cadena.

Depending on how much time passes between installments, Black Panther 3 could see a new protector inherit the superhero mantle from Shuri. A mid-credits scene in Wakanda Forever revealed that Nakia Haiti and King T’Challa had a son named Toussaint. And Nakia has been raising him in secret. Additionally, his Wakandan name is T’Challa, hinting that he is the rightful heir to the African kingdom.
