If you have missed seeing Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, then you’re in luck, because he is coming back to the big screen. The Academy Award-nominated actor revealed that he will be involved in a Marvel movie that will be made next year, according to Deadline. This could mean that there will be another Doctor Strange sequel, or he could simply be referring to another slated Marvel film.

Benedict Cumberbatch confirms that he will appear in a new Marvel movie next year, but we don’t know if that will be a third Doctor Strange film, or something else.

The last time we saw Benedict Cumberbatch don the Cloak of Levitation was in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In addition to this recent MCU film, Benedict Cumberbatch has also appeared in Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

According to Benedict Cumberbatch’s IMDb profile, he is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the 2026 MCU film Avengers: Secret Wars.

If Benedict Cumberbatch does get another Doctor Strange sequel, then we will hopefully get to see Charlize Theron make her full MCU film debut.

He has been cast alongside his fellow Avengers stars, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), and Benedict Wong (Wong). Other co-stars include Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Jonathan Majors.

The plot for Avengers: Secret Wars is currently under wraps, but it will most likely follow the plot of the 2025 MCU film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. This is rumored to include several familiar Marvel faces, like Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, and Hailee Steinfeld, but may or may not include Doctor Strange.

If Benedict Cumberbatch does get another Doctor Strange sequel, then we will hopefully get to see Charlize Theron make her full MCU film debut. The actress made a cameo appearance in an end-credit scene after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Charlize Theron portrayed Clea, who is a powerful sorceress capable of harnessing magical energy, and she is well known as Doctor Strange’s love interest in the comic book series.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Upcoming Projects Away From Marvel

In addition to his upcoming MCU work, Benedict Cumberbatch has nine other projects on his acting plate. Later this year, he will star as Henry Sugar in Wes Anderson’s upcoming film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, an adventurous comedy that will follow his character as he predicts the future while being able to see through objects.

He will also star in the Netflix mini-series Eric, where he will play Vincent, a grief-stricken father who befriends the monster under his missing son’s bed.

While many of Benedict Cumberbatch’s co-stars (like Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson) have sunset their superhero roles, it’s nice to see that he is continuing his iconic role of Doctor Strange. After portraying the magical superhero for nearly a decade, it’s hard to imagine how anyone else could take on the role.
