The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri has been experiencing a meteoric rise this past year, as The Hollywood Reporter announces the 27-year-old actress is joining the MCU in the upcoming Thunderbolts film. The film, which is set to be a pseudo-sequel to 2021’s Black Widow, is still making new cast announcements, as it is scheduled to be released in 2024. For the time being, nothing is known to the public about Edebiri’s role, though fans are confident she can hold her own against the stacked cast after her breakout performance in The Bear.

Ayo Edebiri will be joining an already stunning Thunderbolts cast consisting of Marvel alumnus Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, as well as Marvel newcomers such as Harrison Ford, who is taking over the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross after the unfortunate passing of William Hurt in 2022. The film is set to follow a rag-tag team of morally ambiguous characters with various skills and powers, operating under a shadowy government agency, similar to DC’s Suicide Squad.

Ayo Edebiri likely landed her role in Thunderbolts due to her break-out performance in FX’s The Bear, which put the star front and center on the screen, and earned her a nomination for a Critic’s Choice Award. In The Bear, Edebiri plays an up-and-coming chef named Sydney Adamu who struggles to save a beloved Chicago sandwich shop from its stubborn owners amidst a decline in revenue. With The Bear being renewed for a second season, we can expect to see a lot more of Edebiri’s character, who closed out the first season by striking a partnership deal with Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmy Berzatto.

While it remains unknown what role Ayo Edebiri will be playing in the Thunderbolts film, or in additional MCU films thereafter, her portrayal as Sydney Adamu makes us certain that she can make enemies as fearless as Kang The Conqueror bow and say “Yes chef.” It seems likely that she will play a well-known comic character in the film, as many of the main cast have already been introduced in previous Marvel installations. With the Thunderbolts team not expected to roll out until 2024, there’s still a lot of ground to cover before we know what to expect.

Our first foray into the new phase of Marvel films begins next month, on February 17th, when Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters. Jonathan Majors has teased his brutal arrival of Kang The Conqueror for the film, and promises to be the next big bad of the MCU, appearing in 2025’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that Ayo Edebiri’s Marvel debut in Thunderbolts will come in the middle of this Kang catastrophe, it stands to reason that the two may cross paths.

For now, we’ll just have to wait for more information. Before Ayo Edebiri appears in Thunderbolts, we may get the chance to see her again in season 2 of The Bear, which is rumored to arrive sometime in 2023.
