Zatanna rumors are coming nearly daily at this point and multiple actresses are apparently either up for or being imagined, in the part. That makes sense in the early days of a movie’s infancy with speculation often running rampant about who will ultimately appear on the screen. The latest fan art has The Witcher’s Anya Chalotra donning the magician’s outfit and becoming the next superhero in the DC stable of characters. Check out what Chalotra could look like as the character Zatanna
This latest speculation about Anya Chalotra taking the helm as the character comes heels of rumors last week that Emilia Clarke was on the studio’s shortlist to play the part. Admittedly, she looked like a solid match for the character as well and this casting decision could be a tough one for DC. Zatanna is an interesting superhero in the DC Universe. Her alter ego is also her stage name and she poses as a magician. The catch is she actually can perform real magic, a skill passed down from her father. Zatanna has a rich history in the comic books with some Justice League overlap along the way. It is easy to see her fold into the mix for crossover productions, but the stage magic background does lend itself to its own standalone movie as well.
If this were Anya Chalotra in the Zatanna role instead of Emilia Clarke, the casting would line up a bit more with the look at the original character. A black-haired character in the comics, Chalotra does look more the part here. Not to say that is any kind of hurdle these days, but Chalotra’s Yennefer of Vengerberg does more closely resemble Zatanna in terms of look and style. That being said, in the above fan art the look is more subdued than the comics, opting for a more standard magician style and garb, eschewing the fishnets and high heels from the illustrated pages.
Whether the studio decides to cast Emilia Clarke or Anya Chalotra remains to be seen. Apparently, the Warner Bros plan right now is to develop both a movie and a series around the Zatanna Zatara character that will wrap into the DC Extended Universe. There are no shortage of projects on that front with all kinds of movies and series at various stages of production and pre-production at this point. Few have been given the definitive greenlight beyond some movies, but there is plenty in the works. The goal is to build up their programming in line with what Marvel has done on the big screen and Disney+. They have a long way to go on that front, but adding less popular characters like Zatanna is a way to begin building out the content.
While Emilia Clarke doesn’t appear to have much coming down the pike on screen these days, Anya Chalotra is set to reprise her role when the second season of The Witcher hits Netflix. As far as Zatanna is concerned, that is in wait-and-see mode right now.
